Actually out of the 16 team field, I think only 3 or 4 teams are private. The rest are public school. But yeah private schools definitely have an advantage when it comes to being able to recruit. I think the advantage will show up when the 3rd and 4th pitcher in the rotation come up. I figured that out in LL a long time ago. It was not your 1st 3 or 4 picks that were the most important, its the back end of your line up that counts the most. If your # 7,8,9 hitters are better than their 5,6,7 hitters, you are going to win games. If you only have 1 sho-nuff pitcher but nothing behind him, a team with quality 2,3,&4 pitchers will beat you in a series. Its a team game. Of course, having that 1 special pitcher is pretty nice too, but you have to have somebody behind him.

I've seen many a teams with the league studs in their line ups at the top of the lineup, struggle to winning records because once they get up to the 5 hitter or even earlier, the run production drops off the cliff. Don't mind having studs, whether they are potential All District/ State/All Americans, etc on my teams (football or baseball) But I would rather have a baseball team full of consistent players any day of the week who bat around .300 vs a few who bat over .400 and then the rest bat .250.

2-0 Mater Dei in the bottom of the 3rd. Carroll is visitor. Now 4-0...still bottom 3rd. Now 6-0...getting ugly...still bottom 3rd. Now 10-0 top 5th. Seems like I have seen this before. That Matre Dei team knocks the cover off the ball. I think they scored 11 runs yesterday. I guess you can only have one Hawkins. Although I don't know how much better he would have fared against this team.

Carroll's soph pitcher Benavides got a welcome to the show in the game with MD. He was my Pop Warner QB I was talking about. It's great experience for them anyway. Another Carroll soph got the save in the first game though. Pineda is very good pitcher for his age. He will make his mark before he graduates.

Looks like if you can survive the 3rd inning against Mater Dei you can play with them. 2 games so far....15 runs in the 3rd inning.

Mater Dei coach looks like he knows how to save pitching, but I guess it's easy to pull your starter when he's getting leads like they have.

They out hit Carroll 16 - 4! Even in Carroll's 1-0 win this morning, they weren't hitting the ball at all, except for Hawkins' homerun. Mater Dei looks like they came in with the hot bats. But tomorrow is a new day.

First pitch from Joey Gallo is an easy 96. First AB 96-96-95-95. #mlbdraft #NHSI pic.twitter.com/YzrElkcR
I doubt very many HS thru d1 prospects could handle that.....must be nice.....although....some of the Cal faithful may remember a couple of flame throwers from LT that were dealt with during the 42-1 season......😜

BAHighSchool Bishop Gorman defeated Carroll 8-4. Now set to see if American Heritage or Harvard-Westlake will face Mater Dei in the championship. #NHSI about 1 hour ago

So, if your a high school kid, and you have the label of #1 in the nation, and you finally get the test and have a chance to prove it, and you don;t do so well, does this take a hit to the brain and start to doubt your team's ability? Did this tournament help or hurt Carroll in the long run?

IMO opinion carroll played better when they didn't know how good they could be. I was telling my dad that this just proves that these rankings mean absolutely nothing. Having a number one ranking is a blessing and a curse. It's nice to get the recognition but it can also be a source of complacency. I have seen many a moody team roll into the state tournament with a number 1 state ranking being the odds on favorite to win it all only to see it crumble before my eyes. I saw it happen to calallen last year, there was no way that Ryder team was better than them. Hopefully Carroll will learn from this experience and quickly move on. Because bouncing back is what's important.
