Placing this thread on the football forum was just part of my healing process. I'm over it now and ready for some baseball! Welcome back baseball fans as some of y'all might know Calallen is rank 10Th in the nation to start the 2012 season. This year we are hoping with good heath and dedicated season (a squad that will return 7 starters from last year state finalist), chance to return to their 3rd straight trip to the state tournament and come home with the ultimate prize. LOST: Callean lost 3yr starter behind the dish, 1st baseman and left fielder to graduation. RETURNING: Will be our #1 & 2 pitchers lefty Mando and Wyatt with Lee May and Desi are expected to see some action on the bump. (Desi had a successful T/J surgery and is rehab. very well. Around the diamond will be at 2ND- Lee May and Christian/ SS- Wyatt, Lee May/ 3rd- Greg/ CF- Preston/ RF- Neslony/ and DH- Tate Tate,Sordia, & Reddout, will have a big role in filling in the roster this season. Along with a good group of underclassmen from last season JV and Freshman teams Calallen will be ready come Feb. when the season starts. This will be the 1st yr the BBCOR bats will come to play from what I have seen during the summer/fall/winter tournaments our boys will do just fine, as I witness several of our boys have been hitting ball well. (and some have hit more HR with it) This year our defense should be solid around the horn.

CB25, take off the Calallen cap (if you can pry it off) and since you have been watching the off season likely more closely than almost anyone, give us an other schools, area assessment of the upcoming season.

FB should be solid on the mound with Humpal and Carter in the top two spots. We have a lefty sophomore who can add a change of pace to the rotation. In addition to Humpal and Carter, we have two other seniors coming back that had significant playing time last year, Fitzgerald and Ramos. Mims and Mendiola will be back as juniors who started last year as sophs. Soph Winters should take over at 2nd base and the other spots will be up for grabs.
FB will have a pretty deep group so there is no reason anyone batting under .300 should get significant plate appearances. Batting .283 as a team will not get them past Calallen and Moody. Most of them have been playing in the fall with the exception of the 4-5 football players that will be joining them soon. As FB didn't show much power at the plate last year, I don't think the BBCOR bats will affect them as much as a team like Calallen who had 61 dingers last year. I predict Cal's HR production to drop significantly as those wind-aided mistakes that cleared the fence last year will just be fly outs this year.
As far as pitching goes for the Bluff...I hear that Humpal has a fastball over 90mph pretty consistently, but sometimes it is a pretty flat pitch and later in the season, teams will catch up to it. If he can get some movement on it as he goes, he will be tough on the mound. Carter has ice water in his veins when he is on the mound...doesn't throw as hard as Humpal, but has "it" when he is out there and the more pressure the better. FB will have 6-7 others who are pretty crafty on the mound to develop during the season.
If FB can hit .350 as a team and double their RBI production from last year, I think we can be very competitive. We have more depth this year than the past several...we just need to get the hot bats in the lineup. It should be a fun season to follow.

Actually Kingsville should have a pretty good team this year with all those freshmen and sophs returning from last year. They won't be a pushover anyway. If you consider the younger kids from there that went to Bishop, they would really be good.

So from what you have seen, you don't think the BBCOR will change the hitting much of the better hitters? I kept my son's last home run ball he hit last year just in case he didn't hit anymore ever again...lol. I'm not excited about the change, but I do think there will be closer games this year as pitching should dominate hitting...especially in the first part of the season. Do yo think Cal's HR production will even come close to the amazing year they had last year? Speaking of pitching, who does Ray have pitching this year...I guess the sophomore Merino, but I'm not sure who else? Alice has Oliver and Duplantis back and T-M will have Brittain and Skoruppa. Soph Donny Diaz will be back on the hill for Kingsville (too bad Joseph Rubio is playing for Bishop). It sure is fun seeing all the kids your son played with all those years growing up and succeeding at the high school level.

Some people are saying that the BBCOR bats aren't "dead" as they were feared to be but the sweet spot is just smaller. Kind of like going from hitting Pings back to forged irons.

Very true FBfan, the margin of error in getting a good shot is just greater than before. ERA's in college dropped by about 2 runs last year with the introduction of these bats. Pitchers with a lot of movement in their fastball will have a great year this year. I think you will see greater impact on teams that play their home games in parks with the wind blowing out. There will be less pop flies that clear the fence....and I predict, nothing gets 100' past the infield at T-M!!!

Well let me start by saying these are only observation: Moody- has lost 2 pitchers from last years rotation which both moved to the King district one a lefty, so instead of having three pitchers returning they only have sophomore stand out lefty Senez. Moody also lost their starting catcher, 1st, SS, 3rd, and 2 outfielders, so talking about rebuilding wow they have their word cut out. But Moody is Moody and they always find a way.

JD I don't think we will reach the 61 homers with the new BBCOR these kids will have to square up on the ball. With Vandevere 11, Vanaman 9, Bell 4, and Nevilles 3 all gone from the line up it will be very hard to match those numbers. But with Mathisen 13, Dorsey10, and Nesloney 7 the rest will have to pick up the slack. I know some of the boys in the off-season have played long ball with the bat. So yes I think the pitcher will have a small advantage to start the season but once these boys get used to it they wont be missing to many pitches.

Thanks for the update...i can think of another sophomore that might make the rotation, but he isn't as good as Kenny. Kenny has been throwing alot...I hope he can endure the rigors of what he has gone through. This year might be a little rough on Moody.

The BBCOR bats will make a HUGE difference for any team that relies on the long ball. Home run production was WAY down in the NCAA last year and you'll see the same thing this year in high school. College and high school teams that hit line drives and have speed will have a big advantage. As long as teams don't go UT and bunt EVERY time the leadoff batter gets on base we'll continue to see good baseball with long balls when the balls hit on the BBCOR screws. I know LT has one more big football game to go, but if there was ever a year for the baseball team to do well this will be it. LT has 6 starters returning with 2 others that had significant playing time. They also have all 3 of their top pitchers returning. All 3 are lefties and 2 are committed to D1 schools. Both throw in the low 90's. The 3rd will be playing at the next level somewhere. This is the best top-bottom offense LT has ever had. Historically we've been able to go 4 deep in the batting order and then the bottom fell out. We'll have a good combination of speed and power. We'll only need to fill a hole in RF, 2B, and 1B but we do have the 2 non-starters from last year that played a lot that should be able to fill in at RF and 2B. I know, I know, LT is a football school and I'm not saying LT is winning state, but with the new bats and our pitching we could surprise some people and I strongly believe LT will be the best team in the central texas area.

Nobody from Calallen would dare dispute that ALT also produces great baseball talent year in and out. I know ALT has given Calallen stiff competition each time we meet up in the play-offs, and I for one look forward to following ALT as well as Calallen this year. Cavdad, please keep us posted on Centex baseball this coming year and best of luck on a great season for ALT this year in baseball as well.
