I attended my younger cousin's graduation tonight, and was shocked by the newly installed monstrosity. Pretty ridiculous for what is now a 2A school.

It's Mathis, what do you expect? Brilliant use of resources, no doubt.

Video scoreboards are "the thing" now. Shame of it is, it's easier to get a corporate sponsor to donate a few thousand dollars for a scoreboard than it is to donate for classroom supplies for kids who can't afford them.

Wow! I know sponsorships help pay for significant chunk for these video boards that seem to be the in thing now. It seems like when one school gets one, the next one on line tries to out do the last school to get one (see many of the RGV schools). At the same time, districts like Mathis and the above noted RGV schools who are considered "property poor" and receive Robin Hood funds from "rich" school districts do themselves a great disservice by allowing these luxuries to be done and then turn around and scream they need more money and on top of districts having to cut teaching jobs. Meanwhile districts that fall in the middle like Calallen, GP, and Flour Bluff among others who are good stewards (or try to be) of taxpayers money just shake our heads when we see stuff like this and then we are told our facilities suck by districts who absolutely have little regard for taxpayers money or at least show the perception by spending money on athletic luxuries like this board instead of academics.
If the economy was running strong and it looked good in the long term, I would be less concerned about it as long as they took care of issues in the classroom. But when I see this and my old hometown in the RGV building a frickin $55 million high school that some huge percent will be covered by the state with the locals only paying a share of the bonds, it chaps my hide. And it's not going to be metal building.
Have a good Memorial Day and God Bless our troops and those who have passed serving. Sorry about the rant..
