The glass is half full! I am lucky and get to see most of these towns at least every other week, but for most....a drive through Robstown, Banquete, Aqua Dulce, Alice, San Diego, and finally Freer can be refreshing a few times a year! Alice has changed a lot in the last two years and more change is happening daily. There is a new B&B in San Diego, Anne's Bluebonnet Inn, that was opened by one of my cousins...could be a nice place to stay the night for that long drive back. Also, make sure you stop by the Luchazie General Store on the way in for a burger on the run. This joint was recently opened by the retired Supt. of San Diego ISD has a little of everything you need. The last chance for romance is the Muy Grande Village in Freer. Some hunting enthusiast poured some equity capital into this general store which houses the oldest Whitetail contest in South Texas covering a span of some 46 years. Lionel Garza still roams the grounds today and can spin a yarn if you have the time. King can always go and see which Whitetail Ms. Berry has on the leaderboard, or more recently which whitetail one of her granddaughters, Sophie, has. This is a good place to change into your Kevlar for the remainder of the trip! LOL, not serious about that, but you better gas up and use the head! I'll defer to Booger to find some good places in Laredo to eat after the game!

My parents live near there. Good part of town. Shirley field is closer to downtown so if you want to eat somewhere out there, plenty of choices.

Before them you would get behind a slow truck and you were stuck and it was 55 mph. ugh. I have stopped the places you mentioned in San Diego and Freer. Seriously good hamburgers at the San Diego stop. Well worth the stop and as you say you better take advantage of them. One trip back in the early 90s I saw two guys walking an elephant along the road near the four way stop in Freer. No carnival, just two guys and their elephant out for a walk. I never found out what that was about.

Let me do some research on the elephant FB fan...I remember you telling me this now. I'm sure Lionel would know the story...I don't think he has ventured outside the Freer city limits in the last 50 years.
There used to be a camel that would stick its neck out almost to the road on 888 from Tynan to Beeville. The first time we saw it, we had a few in us and had to turn back around to double check.

Thanks. I really would like to know as I have wondered about that for years. You just don't get many mahouts per square mile around Freer. I wasn't going to bring the camel up as I was already getting called boracho.
