Soto is a good coach and good man. I know he and Jinks are very good friends and actually played together at Judson back in the day. He's got some serious work to do in SM to get them back on track like they were in the late 90s and early 2000s. Hell, I can remember the Rattlers giving Clemens all they wanted in the 98 or maybe it was 99', 4a regional final and then a few short years later knocking SV out of the 1st round of the 5a playoffs in the first round at SV!

I was blessed to be on staff the year we beat SV and man that year started badly... But we lost in the region finals in triple or quadruple ot to MacArthur high... I expected SM to go even further with that group of freshmen as they got older but once kilby left they went downhill quickly.... Good luck to Soto they have a strong fan base or used to anyway

Good luck to Soto they have a strong fan base or used to anyway Their fan base is still pretty good considering the way they've struggled. Two years ago they probably had about 1000-1500 at our house for the game and last year probably around 2000-2500 at Bobcat for our game. Like I said, he will have his work cut out for himself to turn around the program. They have some good athletes and always seem to have some speed so maybe he can get it done. I know this, he will not have much fun in district play facing this gauntlet the next two years: Smithson Valley Judson Wagner NB NBC

Soto is still a good friend of mine. Was in my wedding as a matter of fact. Got to know him when he was with Calallen. Good hire in my biased opinion.

I believe Judson made a good hire in Smith but I felt all along that Soto should have been given his opportunity there. The man is Judson 'inside & out' and I think that pressure from the school board is simply the only reason he was passed over and IMO, got hosed! Judson has had LOTS of internal problems the last 10 years and this is just another example of it. He put his time in there and I think he should have been give the opportunity. I mean what if SCUCISD AD Robert Lehnhoff had not given Mike Jinks the opportunity at Steele 6 short years ago and gone with someone within the district already at Clemens HS?

When the school board rejected the AD's first choice I was afraid this whole process would end in disaster. Instead, the board voted unanimously to hire Soto who I believe to be as good a choice as SM could have hoped for. Now I hope they will give him time and complete authority to install his own program.
Warcat82, you are right, the program basically imploded when Kilby left although there were signs of problems even before that.
Hopefully Soto can get the talent that has been walking the halls and transferring out back on the field for the Rattlers. He has a super tough task to get them competitive in district but if he can improve the defense at all that will be the biggest step. SM has averaged giving up over 40 points a game, sometimes a lot more, over the past 4 years.
I am curious to see what style of offense he will run. I don't think SM has the size of linemen to run the "traditional" Judson offense well but he's getting paid to make that call.
Good luck to coach Soto, I think he will have tremendous community support. From what I have read about him he will be a great leader and role model for our student athletes.

Hey Rattlerbacker, just remember, Judson has never been known for having big offensive lines over the years. They have had a few big fellas mixed in there over the years but over all, their O-lines and D-lines have been average sized but played with nastiness and speed.
