So the forum is kinda dead I thought this would wake it up.
I looking at buying a new rifle for myself. Something along the lines of a .223 or a .243
Been looking and researching Savage arms pretty hard.
This rifle would be mostly for the range and some light Game hunting. Most deer hunting in the Carolinas is with a shotgun or .30-.30. Im not a big deer hunter but if I get an invite I want to be able to drop it. I talked to a few people here and 150 yards is long shot around the Carolinas. Most Gun shops did not carry a wide range of .243 or even .270
Add in your thoughts.

I am old school I guess but I have two that have served me well for a long time. A Marlin lever action 30.30 and a Remington 30.06 bolt action. Not new stuff by any means but both solid as a rock in their performance. I find both to be just about perfect for deer or pigs. Ammo is always readily available. Don't know about NC but here in South Texas pigs are everywhere so I also carry a Springfield .45 semi auto handgun in case a big sow or boar pop out of the brush in a bad mood up close and personal.

Hey Flo, I love both those calibers a lot and own both. .223 is a bit small for deer but will do the job just fine with a well placed shot.....I've killed a bunch of hogs and deer with the .223. The .243 is one of the finest Whitetail Deer calibers ever made IMO. I've killed some very big S TX bucks with my .243.........up to 220 lbs on the hoof in fact. I shoot hand loads in my rifles and for deer I use 55 grain Sierra Game King Boat takes in the .223 and 100 gr Sierra GK boat tails in the .243. Both do a great job but the .243 is hands down the better caliber for hunting because of superior size and knockdown power.
Now, for shooting at the range, give me the .223 simply because you can shoot it a for a lot less $$$. Shells have gotten very expensive and the .223 is probably the best bang for your buck.
As far as SAvage is concerned.........YOU CAN'T GO WRONG AMIGO! I own about 8 or 9 of them and they are all tack drivers. Savage puts all their money into their barrels and triggers and that is all that matters when it comes to a rifle. They are not purdy.......but they flat out shoot! Get one with the easily adjustable Accu-Trigger and you will be happier then pigs in chit! I adjust mine all down as far as they go which is anywhere from about 1.75 lbs to about 2.75 when measured. Once you get used to a good, light trigger you will HATE shooting a rifle with 3.5 lbs or more of pull!
Another great all-around caliber is the 7mm-08. It is basically the same casing as the .243, 22-250, & the .308. The only difference is how the neck is formed for the different calibers.
You will be very happy with either caliber........Just make sure you go with the Savage rifle!
