I bet for not long. It’s a shame that Victoria East that they have to go through the process of hiring a new HC again. But than again how often does an opening like Calallen come around? VE needs to bypass the search committee route, dig deep in their pocket and go hire that HC at Edna. Mitchell been a good program builder everywhere he’s been and a proven damned good coach.

I'm not sure too many coaches want to take on that district they are in honestly. The kids at East are good kids, and definitely have talent, but for the next 2 years it's probably going to be 4th place at best given the powerhouse district they got put in. That's a tough sale for many coaches. Hey come build us a football program but you might only be 6-4 or 5-5 until we can get out of our current district...

A coach with a brass set will get them there, but it won't happen over night. There's some coaches that can do it out there though. East just has to draw their attention.

But I don’t think he got scared away because of the competition. Calallens unexpected opening raised some eyebrows to some young up and comer coaches. I have no idea who or how many applied for that job at Cal, but I wouldn’t be surprised by the quality of some of those coaches. Danaher & his coaches especially Campbell & Cliburn built a hell of a strong program over the years. As Chill stated you got to have a set to think you’re going to walk in and just take over. Can you imagine sitting at the same desk Danaher sat at for decades, the game strategies that Danaher and his staff came up with in all those deep runs in the playoffs? Those are not easy shoes he’s gona try to fill. Cal fans are wanting to get back where they used to be, sooner rather than later. It won’t be easy with no spring football and less than 2 months of off season to work with. I think he’s a good driven young coach who wants to rebuild the Cal program and make his own records. His Dad set his own records, his brother is building up El Campo and now it’s his turn to show what he can do. I wish him all the best to do it his own way.

He left a 5A program where he played, where he would have gotten so much credit for winning for a 4A program where he'll never get credit for anything unless he wins state. Of course he ran away from a challenge. This conversation isn't happening if East wasn't stuck in the beast district they got stuck in.

I've said before and I'll say it again. Victoria has little to no vibe on Fridays. I've attended some games as a casual fan and the atmosphere is lame. Stands are filled with just family members and the smallest student sections where the kids are mostly on their phones. I'm sure coach came in thinking this was going to VHS and Stroman 2.O. I can see why he wanted to bolt, not to mention VISD just lost their superintendent. The new East coach would probably come from a small school or a young assistant from a big program. The fact that this is a non AD job could deter some applicants. I think this is a good spot for one of the McClure brothers. They could bring some life into the program and the city.
