Problem is when you have a staff full of great, experienced coaches. They get better opportunities elsewhere. It’s good that some move on to higher position jobs. Those vacancies provide good up and comer opportunities for other coaches. The key is the current HC needs to only hire the best they can find and not hire just because your related to someone. AKA retread! If you have a program that never has coaches leave there are only two options, you have a excellent staff of coaches or you have a staff of floaters who have no drive to excel and take on the responsibility that comes with a HC job. Before everyone starts to pile on me, yes there are just damned good coaches that do a great job but just don’t want the Head aches that come with HC job. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as they don’t go flat or stagnant on the program. That’s a reason HC”s have to make the hard choices to fire them or demote them. Take for example the OC at GP, he’s got tons of experience, left the OC job at Lewisville to get together with Davis at GP. His wife is an award winning trainer who’s worked at the Collegiate level and high school. Both are outstanding people and trainers. They are both high energy people who work very hard at their jobs. I personally think he would be an outstanding HC/AD. He could apply at some of the best jobs in the state but so far he’s stayed at GP. Some people just love to coach, but they just don’t want the baggage that comes with the HC/AD job.

A house divided cannot stand and man was it divided over the Coach Jay Seibert/Coach Matt Anastacio issue. It seems GP is in a passion for the job cycle of Coach nearing or padding retirement issue. Coach George Harris was coaching in Refugio and owned a house in Portland. Coach Rick Rhoades was the highest paid coach in the Coastal Bend which padded his retirement. Coach Brent Davis is in the 2 minute warning stage of his career and came to GP because he has family in this area. Coach Matt Anastacio came in with fire in his belly and we know how he was treated. The Brownwood Lions players wear a T-Shirt under their pads that has Wood Tough printed on the back. We have Helicopter parents in Portland that send their brat to play Football and we expect Coach Brent Davis to make a hitter out of him. I am involved at GP and will be in Portland tomorrow at the Softball field to watch the Bobcats play. I have two T-Ball games on Thursday and Friday. I will be making Middle School basketball next year and Freshman Basketball and Track and Softball. Season Tickets again for GP Varsity Football. Will GP continue down the same ho hum path or contend for a higher level. I love the kids and am grateful that they give me two hours of escapism. I will make a game or two at Hamilton to see my great grandson there. He is doing great in Football and track and his fathers Fireman Jacket is hanging on the wall at the Firehouse Sub in Portland. May he Rest in Peace. Go Wildcats.

Dude you hate the team you “support” and think you know your ass from a hole in the ground because you are some how related to Gordon Wood. I bet you are still sending the same xerox copies of coaching techniques you sent 8 years ago. And all from an online accumulation that was made over 20 years ago. Who needs rivals when GP has fans like you. You suck.

bunogenius , I just now checked and I have one hanging in my closet. I sent Coach Sam Harrell a copy of a picture of a Brownwood Lion player setting in the stands at a Juniors High game in Brownwood stadium wearing the Wood Tough T-Shirt. Coach Sam Harrell emailed me back a thank you. My grandson was out on the field playing in a game between Gatesville and Brownwood. I texted my son to see if he still has a copy of that photo. I just got back from a softball game in Portland and the Bobcats won and when these 8th graders get in HS, GP is going to have a good Softball team. I will save a story for you and Fannie for later. I have made a lot of trips to Brownwood. One was for Gordon Wood day and President Lyndon Johnson was guest speaker. This ain’t my first rodeo. I watched Coyotes play Breckenridge when Former GP Coach Carlo Mircovich was a Breckenridge assistant. His boss at that time invented the Wishbone offense with the help of Coach Darrell. Coach Mircovich played football at Ingleside. I ate several Christmas dinners with Coach Mircovich after he retired. He was the best DC that GP ever had. Did I mention, this ain’t my first rodeo.

Congratulations, you want a cookie or an ensure? I don’t care if you got to watch LBJ, is that supposed to be impressive? I once ate dinner with George Strait and let me tell you how that makes me cool…it doesn’t, no one f***ing cares old man. And none of it changes the fact that you suck as a person. I can promise more people will go to your funeral to verify your death than to provide comfort and support. You are unbelievable.

I can promise more people will go to your funeral to verify your death than to provide comfort and support. You are unbelievable. buenogenius, I said I would return with a story. 1978 Gregory Portland vs Bay City Black Cats. The game was playoff in Victoria Stadium. It started with a meeting with Coach Ray Akins and the officials. The coach has a list of names of the officials and they are supposed to match. They did not match. The officials were supposed to be from the Valley chapter and these were from the Bryan College station chapter. Coach Ray Akins complained and the Head Official told him to play ball or forfeit. They played ball. Yellow flags began to fly and GP I think racked up 165 yds in penalty's. I think GP had a game earlier in the year that they had the most penalty's of 85 Yds in any game all year. GP was still winning at the end of the game and I think Bay City had 4th down close to GP goal and had to score a TD and Bay City had a receiver take off to the right and one lineman moved on the left and GP defender stepped across and tagged him. Two players in motion and the official penalized GP for off sides and gave Bay City first down on the one yard line. They scored and won 28 to 27. The officials raced off the field. At halftime I went up to the press box to talk to Coach Gordon Wood. Coach Morris Southall and Coach Kenneth West was in the background adding up stats. Me and Coach Wood stood out front and talked about the Band. He was impressed with the GP Band. They had flown to Victoria that evening on a private plane. I went to Booster Club meet on Monday to review the film. Fans wanted to file a suit in Dist. court to stop Bay City. Coach Ray Akins explained the UIL might ban both teams from playing for two years. The game was illegal played because of wrong refs. In the film it showed the Black Cats were holding on about every play. GP was not committing those penalty's. Fans vetted the officials and could not find a connection for reason GP lost on bad officiating. I went home mad as a old wet hen and called Coach Gordon Wood at his home. He had finished practice and was going over the stats. I asked him who would officiate his game with Bay City. He said one group would not be officiating and it was the Bryan College station chapter. He said do you realize GP overcame a 15 yd penalty on every scoring drive? GP dominated and still lost. He asked me if I would get him a copy of the film. I went to Coach Akins house and made a deal that Brownwood Coaches would vote for him to coach the All Star Game in the summer, I think in Houston. I don't know if he was nominated but Brownwood was in the South Zone for two years at that time as was GP. I air freighted the film to Coach Gordon Wood. Coach Wood met with the Bay City Suptd who tried to pull a deal to get there game played in Astrodome a close drive for Black Cats and a 9 hour drive for the Lions. Coach Wood offered Home and Home and the Suptd asked about Brownwood stadium and Coach Wood said it was the worst in the state. They settled for UT stadium in Austin. Brownwood had one three state titles there. I was at one of them when Brownwood played Port Lavaca. The only team I ever saw that was a Rabid as Brownwood is Breckenridge, Coach Gordon Wood warned the officials about Bay City Holding. The yellow flags began to fly. Bay City had superior talent and Brownwood looked like a JV team up beside Bay City. Brownwood QB Scott Lancaster 144 pounds,TB Glen Coles 155,FB Chris Mayo 130 pounds, WB Derwin Wiliams 155 pounds. Chris Mayo was the smallest FB to ever play in a AAA championship game. This was the semi Final round. It was cold and miserable weather and only 6,000 fans showed up bes i des me and my family. Bay City had size and speed at every postion and were compared to the 77 Dickenison team that had beaten Brownwood.40-28. Now the Ace in the hole. In that film Bay City Center Jim Humphries always would lift up the ball and move it forward before he snapped it to the punter. I talked to Coach Carlo Mircovich about that and he said GP could not find anyone that could slap the ball fast enough. Coach Gordon Wood was a boxing coach in the Navy. He stationed 210 pound nose guard in front of the center with his fist in front of ball and give it a back handed knuckle punch the instant the ball was moved. It was beautiful. It sailed over the punters head or rolled back there on the ground every time they punted. The first time resulted in a safety. It is a long story but e were looking out at the game and did not look like Brownwood had a chance. That game was ranked by a Austin Sports writer as one of the top 5 comebacks at that stadium in history. There were two Howard Payne basketball coaches relayed a story to Coach Wood. Coach Ron Mills told his coachs in the press box to roll things up and come down to Shake hands with Coach Wood and Coach Southall to congratulate us for a fine game. Basketball coach Eddie Nelson said we had better wait because he watched Brownood for years and they do not give up. Coach Mills answered Eddie gruffly come on down here. There were 7 minutes and seventeen seconds left on the clock. .It looked like curtains for Brownwood. QB Scoot Lancaster may have been the only one on Brownwood side that thought they could win and he told Coach Wood we will score twice and win. The comeback began. The Brwonwood assistants were in Wichita Falls scouting the Lubbock Estacado-Gainesville game and the Bay City Scouts were sharing the same Press box room and listening on the radio the game in Austin. The Bay City scouts were whooping and hollering and razzin the Brownwood scouts and even asked for their notes. About that time Legendary Coach Joe Golding stuck his head in the door and said you Brownwood scouts better keep scouting and writing he told the Brownwood scouts. "Ol Babe has scored and is on the move again. Bay City tried a comeback that failed. Brownwood 33 Bay City 28 Final score. I think I was more exhausted than the players. The Coach Gordon Wood family called him Babe. He was the last one born. Coach Joe Golding was my history teacher and he is the grandfather in law of Coach Sonny Dykes of TCU.

buenogenius how about another story. Copied from article in New York Times.
If he hasn't already done it, Parcells should tell his players the story of Gordon Wood, a largely unknown man who Parcells said had as great an influence on him as Halas, Lombardi, Noll and Landry. When they hear the story, Jets players may understand that winning hinges on the agonizing little things that take place away from cameras and crowds, on hot summer practice days. Wood was the legendary coach who worked at seven Texas high schools over 43 seasons, 26 of them at Brownwood. He won 405 games. Parcells was the defensive coordinator at Texas Tech 20 years ago when he met Wood during spring practice. He noticed a ''rough looking, leathery kind of looking guy'' wearing a maroon jacket with a ''B'' on his cap. The man came back, and came back, and came back. ''We had 20 spring practices,'' Parcells said. ''I know he was there at least 15 times, always down by the linebackers.'' Parcells finally introduced himself to Wood, who said he coached in ''a little town down the road here.'' Outside of Lubbock? Parcells asked. ''No, a little further,'' Wood replied. ''I said, how far is it?'' Parcells recalled. ''Well it's two and one half hours one way,'' Wood replied. Parcells asked Wood if he stayed in a hotel, and Wood said no, he would drive up in the morning, watch practice then drove back home. Five hours on the road. ''And I know he did it least 15 times, and at the time he had to be 60 years old,'' Parcells recalled. Wood was actually 63. At the end of spring practice, Wood told Parcells he'd been watching him and thought he was pretty good. Then he peppered him with questions. ''He asked, 'Why you teaching this, show me how you do that,' '' Parcells said. ''Here's a guy who never lost, he never ever lost. I think of him every season when we start. I think about this guy. ''He doesn't even know me. I don't him. I only crossed paths with him one year, but he was very influential on me. The guy's 58, 60 years old, done 300-something games and is driving five hours a day to find out something.'' A new era begins tonight, but the new Jets attitude is a work in progress. The new attitude is symbolized by the old coach who drove two and a half hours up Route 377 to learn a new technique. Parcells roars, Parcells chides, and the spirit of that old coach from Brownwood is never far from his consciousness.
I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Grant Teaff one time and he told a story about going into the Green room the next day after a game. This was his usual habit to review the film from the night before. It was dark in the early morning and he noticed something or somebody was laying on the couch. He turned the light on and it was Coach Gordon Wood. He said the night man let him in and he slept on the couch. Coach Wood and Coach Teaff were friends. Coach Gordon Wood said can we put the film of the game on and watch it and Coach Teaff said sure. They watched the game and Coach Gordon Wood got up and put on his coat and hat and started out the door and Said ”You never learn so much, you can’t learn some more and left”.

One time long ago I took a flight to Australia on the same flight with then president Jimmy Carter he was a very nice man and I personally met him and we hit it off instantly and he gave up his first class seat to me and I was happy the stewardess gave me the option of orange or black caviar and being a coyote I naturally chose the orange caviar I atete so much of the orange caviar until the ran out but I was still hungry so I reluctantly took the black caviar even though it reminded me of a team that ran a veeer offense which I despised but the caviar was even better and it taught me what no coach out of this world could do and follow my assignments on defense and I swear to this day that black caviar had some black magic Carter went to Australia to try to convince them to grow wheat since he put a wheat embargo on Russia and I politely warned him that Australia can't grow wheat in the outback due to the soil and lack of rain but he didn't flinch needless to say it was a complete failure but maybe some lessons were learned.
Now, I want to know how many of y'all read that gibberish 🤣
