Every A team won district 7th-Jv last year. Should be good for the future. Varsity looses alot of good players. Returning GP players and replacing with young faces will have a new district. Alice and Miller will be top district opponets.

There lots of work going on around Ray Akins field with construction crews drilling the piers for the foundation for the fieldhouse and indoor facility. They just started building the new turf baseball and softball fields. They are about to open the new early childhood development center on the old Welder elementary location. It seems every available locations around Portland and Gregory are in developing stages of construction of new home subdivisions. It won’t be long before both towns are connected by new homes. The new shopping center north of Buddy Ganem is coming along quickly and will be comprised with a Target store and 10 other vendors with more signing on each month to build even more stores and restaurants in GP.

The quiet town on the bay is swiftly going away from when I moved here 32 years ago. I have to go early to HEB and Walmart to avoid the mass of shoppers hitting those stores the last few years. It’s getting annoying with so much traffic especially between 4:30-6:00 in the afternoon in Portland. I hate to see what all this growth is going to do but I’m certain between 5-10 more years GP will definately be going to 6A in football with many other sports.

Whole neighborhoods being built. I don't know where all these people are coming from. Too many cars for the roads especially morning go to work and go home times.

They are just about to complete the new overhead on ramp to 181 south from Buddy Ganem rd. They have been working on that ramp for over two years. The off ramp under it will exit on Wildcat drive.

I don’t have a huge problem with the growth, but the infrastructure isn’t built for this.

I've been hearing this since I joined this forum in 2011. At some point it becomes like the story of the boy who cried wolf. Even back in 1989 when Coach Bush left 5A Alice for 4A G-P he was asked on the local television station why he would leave a 5A for a 4A and he said because of the growth in G-P and how'd they'd be bigger than Alice soon. It never happened. Well you do now finally have a few more students enrolled than Alice but it took over 3 decades and needed Alice losing all the oilfield 10 years ago to happen. I actually would like to see this happen. I want our area to have some 6A progams so hopefully you're right. I don't see why you'd be complaining about growth though. At least you didn't die over the last decade like Alice.

I don’t have a huge problem with the growth, but the infrastructure isn’t built for this. They are working to expand the capacity at the facilities involved in water, sewer and drainage. It’s never as fast as we would like it to be, but progress is being made.

It won’t take you long to see how much growth has happened and how much more is coming. Why you want to question it is not something anyone in GP really cares about.

I wish we didn’t have this much activity but it’s here and it’s not going to shrink. There are people who are experts in population growth and I’m damned sure not one of them. I’ve seen the estimates and it’s very surprising. Everyday I see the operations people from the new industrial plants, the construction workers and the maintenance staff and the supporting companies to the plants. The majority of them are young the 25-30 range (elementary kids)some in the 30-40 range (middle school kids) and a few in the 40-50 yr olds (high school) but not that many. I haven’t even looked at the enrollment of the elementary or middle school enrollments but I know teachers in those schools and they all say enrollment has increased significantly. The high school numbers are increasing from 2 yrs ago from mid 1400”s to the latest snapshot of 1600. That number is steadily growing each yr. GP thankfully isn’t experiencing an explosion of new students like the big cities and the outskirts of them. But GP is growing and faster than we like.

I stated a FACT. A fact is a fact whether you want to accept it or not. Show me the lies in the statement I made. I wasn't even being negative about your program I was just pointing out that we've been hearing it for over a decade - these exact same claims. So maybe now it is true but you've been saying it for over a decade so at some point you were gonna be right after saying it for so many years lol.

GP is definitely growing. Lots of new housing, new businesses and restaurants.
But, you are also correct - it’s been stated for while that it was growing.

Cain’t we all just get along. Actually you are both right. There are a lot of construction workers coming in to Portland but they are living in RV’s at a Park between Gregory an Taft and in a new one at the edge of Taft and there. Is a one filled up in Sinton there is a new big housing project going up in Sinton on the Taft side of town. GP is building on the Odem side of town. Portland has a new Target going up and some new business such as Raising Cane chicke Resturant and James Avery among others. GP will be 5A II next two years and it would be a lot of students to jump to 6A. I was at my great grandsons basketball game at the middle school this morning and then the A&H Auction thie evening. Congratulations to Ryder Harrison on getting $8,750 dollars for his Hog. I will check with my grand daughter who is a teacher at GP.

I've been living in Portland close to 50 years and I can sense the excitement all around town from the long term residents. youtu.be/zDm2m5UgIIM
