This Class 3A-D1 Region 4 Regional Semifinal game will be held at Seguin's Matador Stadium on Friday Nov. 24th at 1 pm. Both teams are primed to score lots of points in this one. Should be a fan favorite and spectator spectacle for sure. I look for a good turnout and I will personally be in attendance to see what transpires.

The newly-built Matador Stadium opened in late Sept. 2020 at the same location of the old Matador Stadium that was 60 yrs old and outdated. The new Matador Stadium sports one of the largest High Definition Video scoreboards in the nation at 1403 sq. ft. The pressbox is two-tier w/ an elevator, the walkways are wide with bench seats for the handicapped and the stadium is wheelchair compliant and friendly. There are 125 restrooms at this facility. Of course the artificial turf, lighting, and everything else is first class as well. This stadium suits the purpose perfectly for a playoff atmosphere football game with a great location right off of I-10 and 123 in Seguin. Seating capacity is 8200.....5400 on the home side and 2800 on the visitor side.

Goliad will be the visiting team, so parking for that side will be adjacent to Hwy 123 Bypass on the visiting side of the stadium. All tickets will be sold online. There will be another playoff game at the stadium that kicks at 7 pm Friday night between Class 4A-D1 Alice(10-2) vs Port Lavaca Calhoun(8-4). I was born in Alice, Texas.....my Dad and Mom were from that area and my relatives lived there for over 50 yrs.....but everybody has moved off now. GO YOTES!!

The game will be streamed Live on NFHS for those that have a subscription. I would greatly encourage a monthly subscription of 11.99 right now so that you can watch ALL the playoff games from the comfort of your easy chair. You can watch them LIVE or ON DEMAND later at your convenience, and even watch previous games to get an idea about each team for the upcoming game. Then you can cancel the monthly subscription before it renews again in 30 days if you wish. It's really affordable for watching all the games.

Hopefully, this game will get an announcing crew assigned to call the play-by-play of the game. Sometimes it is a crew that calls the weekly play-by-play for one of the schools on the field.....sometimes it is a contracted NFHS announcing crew. And sometimes there is no announcing crew....just someone running the Livestream video. But this far into the playoffs there will most likely be a crew to do the call for these Livestream playoff games.

Good quality video on the Livestream of the event is another consideration.....sometimes it's good and sometimes not so good. And sometimes it depends on your internet speed and connection. Hopefully everything will be clean and smooth on Gameday....the weather forecast will be clear and mid-60's at least...esp. at a 1 pm kickoff time.

From what I saw in its most recent game against CC London, Blanco appears to have a dual-threat QB back there. Looks like he can throw it accurately and has some speed to get around the corner when he's rolling out or on keepers. I will need to watch some other games to get a better overall indication of the Panthers skill players and lines. That game last week got away from London very early, they made some HUGE mistakes that Blanco took advantage of, and kept losing possessions to turnovers and poor execution on downs and distances....IMHO. It was NOT the London team of the week before or the one that played Goliad tight. Give Blanco some credit there, but London self-imploded on countless occasions the whole game. So it was not a good example for me to gauge Blanco's team overall...even though I was able to see how they tend to operate on offense.

I would say that Goliad has bigger men on the lines on both sides of the ball and of course a much better defense....just for starters. Bigger men than Blanco has on the lines, and maybe a better defense than Blanco also. The speed of the Tigers will be better than London also....on both sides of the ball. So forget about London....let's just consider the Tigers vs the Panthers. Goliad will have more speed on the Gridiron of Glory than Blanco will have....even though Blanco does have some speedy guys. I think the defense for Blanco relies more heavily on quickness than size, and does a good job containing offenses. I'm curious to see how they will try to contain Goliad's explosive ground and pound attack. Yeah....an EXPLOSIVE ground and pound attack....you heard it right. The Tigers don't normally throw all that much during the game, but can burn you thru the air when you least expect it. But what they do best most of the time is run the ball and run the ball and run the ball. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later.....but eventually they will break off big scores on long runs for TDs....like clockwork. They will find the weakness in the defense and exploit it.....and keep exploiting it until an adjustment is made. Then go another way.

In the playoffs, both teams are usually pretty darn good....so it all comes down to matchups and turnovers. Sometimes inclimate weather too, but I don't think this will become an issue on Friday. Sometimes it's the matchup in the lines, and sometimes it's the skill players winning their matchups. And sometimes it's a really talented QB that makes all the difference. A good QB can take a team a looong way during the Texas High School playoffs....but so can dominating big lines. They can make the difference in protecting the QB and opening up holes and creating spaces for their RBs. And sometimes it's the defense....a really good defense can overcome a really good offense, or at least limit that good offense substantially enough for their team to have more possessions and more scoring opportunities. Pick your poison....Goliad has big lines and a very proven defense. They also have great speed at the skill positions. Just not what I would call a high-flying passing game.

I'm going with Goliad in a very, very close game something like 35-31
Blanco is a tough team but I think Goliad is going to be too much for them

I'm not sure about Blanco's defense, but I will assume it is very stingy and is able to force lots of 3rd down situations. The problem is that it is difficult to get a good comparison for what Goliad brings to this game offensively. I think we will all have to just watch this game to see what happens and how each team and sideline adjusts during the contest. Usually the coaching staff for each team will want to stick with what they do best and what got them to this game, but sometimes that doesn't work because the other team has already done their homework on defending against it. Remember....the team that scores the most points wins. So the whole basis of all of these games is predicated on stopping the opposing offense and getting that football. IF that does not happen, then it falls upon the offense to score when they do have the football. Some teams have better defenses, and some teams are more offensive in nature.....high scoring teams. When facing a team that has both....your team better be able to score to keep pace, too. Looks like both Goliad and Blanco have fairly high-scoring records for the season against their schedules. So we must assume that both teams are highly capable of scoring offensively. Hence....the turnovers become important and may play a very important role in which team wins this game. Goliad's weakness defensively is their pass defense in the secondary....they are very strong against the run. The secondary has speed and gets interceptions, but are suspect to blown coverages and/or mistakes in coverages. I look for Blanco to exploit this weakness in the Goliad defense and go to the air downfield. Goliad is pretty good against the short and sideline throws. Midrange and longer throws downfield will loosen up their defense to allow for gains in the running game and shorter passes.

Doesn't Blanco have the Coach that turned Industrial's program around? If so he is a good coach!
I'm still trying to figure out where Goliad came from this year. They've surprised the heck out of me. I'm rooting for them to make it to the Regional Final!

Goliad was over their head in this one....waaay outcoached IMHO. They had the talent on the field, but did not use it to their advantage. Hats off to Blanco and their coaching staff.....great preparation and great execution against a very formidable defense. The QB for Blanco is very athletic, shifty, savvy, and has enough speed to get the corner. Good vision of the field and good throwing arm. Couldn't ask more of your QB.....he's the reason they are still playing.
Should be able to matchup and handle what Edna has, for sure. Edna is NOT the team they were last season, but still very good.

Blanco plays like they did yesterday and they will win by 3+ scores. That QB is a stud and his receivers catch the ball and the defense gets after it.
