The long 5 game non-district schedule is finished and overall the district looked pretty down. Granted Judson, Steele, and NB played tough non-district schedules but I expected better out of them.
I am pleasantly surprised to see that Steele has fielded a pretty solid defense allowing just 17 ppg at this point and of the 85 points allowed, 51 of those came after the games were in hand and against backups. The starting offense and defense looks good but there is a big, big drop off from the 1s to the 2s on both sides of the ball. Depth is a serious issue.
Judson is struggling offensively but has the potential to really get it going. Defensively they've given up a lot of points but when you consider who they played that has a lot to do with it. The WL game was a good example as it was pretty close the 1st half and when their offense could not get anything going at all the defense finally wore down and the gates opened up for the WL offense.
NB struggled early on and were not their normal selves committing a lot of stupid penalties that cost them big in at least 2 of their games. But the last 2 weeks they look like they are on track and playing Weiss down to the wire losing 50-52 tells me they are a very solid team and if they can take it up a notch they could certainly beat Steele and Judson and win the district in what likely is their last year in 6a.
Clemens' offense is really struggling and I see no way they beat either of the top teams the way they are playing. If they do not improve they may be at home for the playoffs and East Central or SM in their spot.
Right now I see this district going:
1 Steele
2 or 3 NB/Judson
4 or 5 SC/EC
This Thursday night is a big game to open district with Steele @ New Braunfels. The winner of this game will be in the driver's seat early
