WOW
I never saw this one coming. WL took it to Guyer in a big way. I am convinced even with their Starting QB WL still wins this game by 7-10 and I did not think that was going to be the case. I'd not watched any video on Guyer this year and to be perfectly honest a couple of Guyer's 5a teams were better than this one and the 2010 team that our kids beat in the finals was much better. That 2010 team had a ton more speed and size as well.

A good coach would have pulled him to the side and told him to watch his body language.

I was diapointed that the Guyer coach was not better prepared for losing his starting QB. Reminds me of Coach Mack Brown in the Bama title game. The best team lost because Gilbert acted like it was his first playoff game. I thought it was interesting that Westlake had normal size players and looked like a lot of other teams and even some in the Coastal Bend.

I want to cut the kid a break because he looked 14 and barely that age meaning he might be a July birthday and could have been placed in 8th grade. He probably shaves once a week with a cheap Bic razor too. If the coach didn't have an option B such as an upper classmen to go in, he should have ran the ball a lot more. No doubt they would have stacked the box, but eventually he would have broken some tackles which he eventually did.

Guyers Freshman QB definitely looked younger than most. He was not expecting to play and the situation was way too big for him. But I think he will be better for it. Hopefully he learned as a backup you better be ready to go at any moment. I did think he got a little better as the game went on but that still wasn't good. With the starter coming back for his senior year this kid gets a chance to sit and learn and hopefully will get some playing time during the season.

This is why I’ve always thought that every team needs some form of a wildcat offense. Guyer has enough talent, they should have been able to take their best athlete, put him at QB and run direct snaps. I mean, anything would have been better. I’d always like to point out that Westlakes defense was very, very good and has been all year.

Yep I agree he and the Ducanville Freshmen QB might look back at last weekend and laugh about it while holding a championship trophy. It will make a good media story for sure.

I’d say the kids put in work and coaching is as good as it gets.

My question is was that the best defense in the state this year? I would have loved to see how they would hold up against NS.

This shows you what superior coaching can do at the HS level! Indeed WL have very average size and speed, probably below average for 6a and yet they won it all. It did help having a very easy playoff path and absolutely nobody standing in their way to challenge from R3 at all. I believe R3 had probably 3-5 5a teams that were better than any of the 6a D2 teams this year.
