Battle of the bridge will be the best game in the coastal bend. GP vs Carroll ! Watching paint dry or grass grow might be more exciting.

Wildbill has a point. People watching the demise of GP that was once the most feared team to take the field in the Coastal Bend May draw a lot of interest. I remember seeing 2 or more opposing players helped off the field after a kick return. I remember seeing 2 or more opposing players helped off the field after a QB scramble. Have not seen that in many a moon.

Not sure I think they went to the state championship during the Nixon Administration. I vaguely recall something about that in an old history book. But, like 15 years ago, they went four rounds deep. So that’s something.

They were the most feared team in 4A up until Calallen started their run 30 years ago. But 4A not the entire Coastal Bend like this dude is saying.

Well seems like one thing is consistent. They have not been what they were at one time. They don't just reload and keep it going. So guess the question is when do they become relevant again. To me that would be 3 rounds deep.

Coach Ray Akins was not in that 85% group that neglects the kicking game. I have seen as many as 3 players on the ground trying to break through that wall to make a tackle. Some did not return for the rest of the game. I have seen GP do a QB rollout and then have to reverse field and the blocks on the persueing defense leave 2 players lying on the ground and some did not return for the rest of the game. GP DC Coach Carlos Mircovich played for and Coached under Coach Emory Bellard at Breckenridge when they were winning state championships. However Plano said they had heard that GP was a hard hitting team but they had played Brownwood the week before and Brownwood hit them harder than GP.

I think Alice and Refugio can make a case why they might have been more feared. GP would always pound the valley teams in the first round and lose in the second, save for a couple of seasons in the 70's. They lost a lot of second round games to Cuero which was no slouch back then, but never got to really test their horses against what were the suburban, city, or metro schools in the San Antonio, Houston or Austin areas like Alice and Refugio did.

Found a Thursday game at Bryan Allen Academy (Private 6man) on Thursday night. Went to my first 6 man game last year and it was a blast. So starting off this season that way will be fun. Still going to Bastrop vs Bryan Rudder @ Merrill Green Stadium for my Friday night game. Going to look and see if I can find a Saturday game close enough to make the trip.

I remember when GP moved up to 4A (now 6A) for 2 years back in 82 I believe. They were in with Alice, Kingsville and CCISD when CCISD was good. I believe Alice beat them 35-0 and knocked them out of the playoffs. Akin's made sure they went back down to 3A after that.
