So yesterday morning I was headed into the office early, and I was traveling down hwy 138 between 195 and 183 headed into Austin. I was almost to 183 when I came up on a head on collision between a Chevy silverado and a Chevy impala. It had just happened and there was smoke everywhere and a horrid gas smell. The young man in the truck was screaming in pain, and the lady in the car was not responsive. I went to check on her and found no pulse. I looked for a way to do CPR but the steering wheel was pressed against her face and she was pinned in the car. The backseat had two empty car seats in it which broke my heart knowing there were now kids without a mom. She looked to be mid thirties in age. The young man was also pinned in his truck and ems cut him out and halo flighted him to Austin. He looked like he was barely 21. I can not get the scene out of my head, and especially seeing a person die right there and not be able to do anything for them to even try to save her. That happened at 7 am and they still hadn't cleared the scene of the carnage at 11:30 when they finally let me leave the scene after asking what I saw. It was crazy there were no skid marks what so ever and that road is 65 and most do 75 down it. I now understand how just one momentary distraction like a phone, changing the radio, or whatever can lead to tragedy in the blink of an eye. Please ladies and gentlemen pay attention when your driving, whatever it is can wait til you stop or pull over to handle.

I have witnessed such horrible accidents in my life as well. They are still vivid graphic images in my mind that never go away. A Semi-Truck with Trailer hit a bridge pillar and totaled the Semi and trailer. I helped search the wreckage. Two bodies found. The driver fell asleep after partying.
I saw a car go the wrong-way on I-64 between St. Louis and Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Head on collision with a smaller car killed both drivers. Old man went wrong-way.

Folks its not Just when were driving. A shipmate of mine was walking (on base) while texting on his phone and was backed over by a bus. He survived but was not able to continue serving. If you are not paying attention to what you are doing it's not a question of IF you will get hurt or hurt someone else.... IT'S WHEN
