I do see that they have one common opponent between them played 2 weeks apart in Jourdanton. Both lost Jourdanton 56 Hondo 25 Jourdanton 41 Goliad 20 It looks like both have played pretty weak schedules but Goliad did play and beat Edna in district and that says something to me. They also held Edna to just 6 points. Hondo has scored 402 while allowing 216 while Goliad has scored 439 allowing only 139 points. I think Goliad's defense is substantially better than Hondo's defense and they will be the big difference in this game. I'm just having a hard time seeing this game closer than 21 points. Believe me....I would be thrilled to see Goliad jump out to a big lead and force Hondo out of their game. IF this were to happen, then I think Hondo is in for a looong night. IF Hondo can score first, or at least trade scores with Goliad early on.....then they might be able to keep this game close the whole way. I just think it totally depends on the Hondo QB Richter and how he performs throwing the ball. Goliad has looked more improved in the secondary lately, though. That's why we go watch these games....to see what happens!!

BTW....I don't call Jourdanton, Edna, and Tidehaven "weak"....even though QB Rosenquest did not play in those early games for whatever reason. And look what happened last week....all 4 of Goliad's district playoff teams won. Goliad beat ALL of them. That's Edna, Industrial, and CC London....so that says to me their schedule was NOT as weak as it seems. You probably mean it looks "weak" compared to the Class 3A-Div.1 Region 3 teams. Well heck yeah....that's the toughest region in the state. But for Region 4....I think Goliad is a viable contender to win the region.

IF somehow the Hondo Owls defense can limit the Tigers offense to less than 30 pts....then they have a very good chance of winning this game. I just don't see Goliad scoring more than 30 pts in this game and coming out the loser. But I could see Goliad scoring less than 30 pts and still coming out the winner because of their defense. This will be a very good game to watch this Friday Night. Get READY TO RUUUUMBLE!!! And GRRR...EAT EM UP TIGERS!!! Nope Aint happening I don't see Hondo over 21 in this game. Goliad has allowed 1 team since the Jourdanton loss to get more than 12 points and that was CC London. I just don't think Hondo is going to have enough horses to get this race won.

And guess what??? All of those tough teams in Region 3 will eliminate each other before the Region 4 champion has to face the winner of Region 3. And in any one given game anything can happen in the Texas High School Playoffs. That's another reason we watch these games and get so excited....it's one and done for the losers.

You are most likely right, Clem. Unless something crazy happens like a bunch of Goliad turnovers....but they don't fumble much and run the ball exclusively if they have a 2 TD lead. So yeah....most likely Goliad will pose a very formidable defense to Hondo on Friday night. So I look for Hondo to already come prepared to throw the football. They scouted Goliad against the pass already.....and saw what London's almost exclusive passing game was able to accomplish against Goliad's defense. So Hondo should be pass-heavy in this game, IMHO.

I watched the Jourdanton/Goliad clips again. Goliad fumbled on the 1/2 yd line going in for the score on one possession. Then on a later possession a deflected pass from inside the endzone was caught by a lineman for another score. That was a 14 point differential right there on 2 nightmare plays....so the game against Jourdanton was really close. The deflected pass play happened late in the 4th....and the fumble at the goal line happened in the 3rd. Sometimes these things happen in high school football.

Welp.....Goliad dominated the LOS and Time of Possession enroute to a 41-21 win that could easily have been 2 more TDs. They took a knee in victory formation on the Hondo one yard line to end it graciously. Hondo did put up a fight and tried to pass on Goliad, but ended up throwing a couple of interceptions along the way. Goliad gets a very tough Blanco team in the next round. It only gets more difficult to chalk up a win going forward. Congrats to the Hondo Owls on a great season....they gave it their all tonight to stop this Tiger ground attack, but just could not. The Goliad Tigers advance to Round 3 looking good on both sides of the ball.

Haven't checked yet....but maybe Goliad had 500 yds total offense tonight. They only threw a few passes and completed maybe 2 or 3. So most of the yardage was on the ground.
