The Brother that had the Cottons in Portland was better than Calallen but he closed the doors and joined the brother in Calallen. i think his rent may have been to high. I knew the original Joe Cotton and ate at his first place in Robstown before moving out to the highway. That was in the 60's. All of the restaurants are having employee problems. The Back Street in Sinton has sold to new owners. It’s was one of Joe’s grandsons that had both. The same Grandson and his Uncle had a legal dispute about the Cotten name which led to him having to add “Mike” to his Calallen location. The uncle was rumored to want to rebuild in Robstown for years, but that never happened. Want to say he was the one that opened a location briefly in College Station a few years back. Not sure if it was him, but it didn’t last long . Mike was able to bring a number of the old Robstown employees with him. Sadly one long time old timers passed away about a year or so ago. A few did venture off to do other things. Want to say the owner of Mr G’s off I-37 near the Crosstown was a former Cotton pit master. I hope the quality doesn’t go down at Back Street. I used to work in Sinton and that was a twice a week place for lunch. At least Butterchurn is still good. We make the short drive on Sundays after church for lunch maybe once a month. All true. Cecil was the glue after Joe past away. My dad would go there early every morning and have coffee with Joe and then Cecil. Family business is always tough. The fire just finished off a place that big shots would fly in and land in the grass median. I enjoyed the old place too. It was right off business 44

Chris said they knew they needed to open on evening and weekends to stay in business and the new owners plan to open evening and weekends starting in mid August. The new owners have been in the kitchen for several weeks now. Butter Churn is doing well .

Cottons in Robstown and the old Mac”s BBQ in Gregory burnt down a couple years ago. I happened to be driving by that day thru Gregory when it caught fire in the pit room. Macs was grandfathered in and lacked the fire suppression equipment that are mandated in newer restaurants. There was word going on around town that they wanted to rebuild but just last month Mac finally came out and said it wasn’t going to happen. Sad day to many of us here in GP. Yes, but did Gordan Wood like the BBQ there? Just asking for a friend.

You know a place I miss down there that also was lost to fire... The Big Red Barn!!! Man that was good food.
For BBQ places, all you gents should make the trip to Lexington, Texas. There is a place there, Snow's BBQ, only open on Saturdays, and it opens at like 7 am and closes when they run out of meat (usually about noon or so). That place has the best Brisket in the country!!! They've even been in Texas Monthly as Rated #1 in Texas.

When you go to Port Lavaca and want BBQ. Go by White's BBQ. It's not far from the stadium. Just take the right at the light by Buccees and it's not far on the right. Was the best and maybe the only in PL when I was there.

From what I've heard about Snows is you better not show up hungry because you might have to wait awhile. You might end up Hangry by the time you get to the front of the line.

We used to go there every time we were at the coast and I'd be so damn overfull and uncomfortable for the next 6 to 8 hours it was ridiculous. lol

Clemcadiddlehopper it is strange you should ask and I hesitate to cater to your issues about Coach Gordon Wood and the closet he got to Cottons Barbecue was when he was guest speaker at the Miller Football Banquet and also at the GP Football Banquet. I suspect he was partial to Underwood's Barbecue in Brownwood and I ate their barbecue at Brownwood and Wichita falls and loved their Cherry cobbler. Coach Gordon Wood did stop off and eat at Ken Hall(Sugarland Express) Barbecue Restaurant in Fredericksburg and visit with Ken Hall and got his side of the story of his feud with Coach Bear Bryant. Coach Wood had already heard Coach Bryant's side of the story. Coach Gordon Wood related both sides of the story to me. I have stopped off at Ken Halls Barbecue several times and it is good. I like the Deli on Main street also. My favorite Barbecue is City Market in Luling Texas. I also like Blacks in Lockhart and I recently ate at Krauts Barbecue in Lockhart. Salt Lick Barbecue in Kyle is fascinating place. I've been everywhere, man I've been everywhere, man Crossed the deserts bare, man I've breathed the mountain air, man… Johnny Cash
Article from Texas Monthly When Cedric Benson wrapped up his high school career this year, the star of Midland Lee’s football team had rushed for 8,423 yards, earning the title of the best running back in Texas. But even those eye-popping stats put him far behind the state’s most prolific rusher of all time. Ken Hall, who played for Sugar Land from 1950 to 1954, ran, dived, spun, and hurdled his way to a staggering 11,232 yards. During his senior year alone, the man dubbed the Sugar Land Express rushed for 4,045 yards, a distance some people don’t walk in a year. Now 65—“I’ve joined the society of Medicare and Social Security,” he says—Hall has remade his name as part of another great Texas pastime: eating barbecue. Fifteen years ago he moved to the Hill Country town of Fredericksburg, where he opened Ken Hall’s Barbecue Place. His specialty? “If you can’t do brisket in Texas,” he says, “you should close the doors. And we do brisket well.” Until recently, he also announced local high school football games, proving that he hasn’t lost his love of the sport. “I follow it, and I pay attention to it,” he says. “To me, it’s real football. Still, every fall, writers call me and ask how many records I have, and I tell them, ‘I don’t know. I don’t keep up with that anymore.’”

I finally tried Cottons a few months ago. The sauce ruined it for me. Same sauce they’ve always used. They were pretty damn successful before the fire I don't know I'm just saying I didn't like the sauce. Not for a place as locally famous as them. But everything else was very good.
