I think Nolans or Mike Cottons barbecue is a better choice.

I think Nolans or Mike Cottons barbecue is a better choice. I finally tried Cottons a few months ago. The sauce ruined it for me.

The Brother that had the Cottons in Portland was better than Calallen but he closed the doors and joined the brother in Calallen. i think his rent may have been to high. I knew the original Joe Cotton and ate at his first place in Robstown before moving out to the highway. That was in the 60's. All of the restaurants are having employee problems. The Back Street in Sinton has sold to new owners.

Cottons in Robstown and the old Macās BBQ in Gregory burnt down a couple years ago. I happened to be driving by that day thru Gregory when it caught fire in the pit room. Macs was grandfathered in and lacked the fire suppression equipment that are mandated in newer restaurants. There was word going on around town that they wanted to rebuild but just last month Mac finally came out and said it wasnāt going to happen. Sad day to many of us here in GP.

The Back Street in Sinton has sold to new owners. Itās was one of Joeās grandsons that had both. The same Grandson and his Uncle had a legal dispute about the Cotten name which led to him having to add āMikeā to his Calallen location. The uncle was rumored to want to rebuild in Robstown for years, but that never happened. Want to say he was the one that opened a location briefly in College Station a few years back. Not sure if it was him, but it didnāt last long . Mike was able to bring a number of the old Robstown employees with him. Sadly one long time old timers passed away about a year or so ago. A few did venture off to do other things. Want to say the owner of Mr Gās off I-37 near the Crosstown was a former Cotton pit master. I hope the quality doesnāt go down at Back Street. I used to work in Sinton and that was a twice a week place for lunch. At least Butterchurn is still good. We make the short drive on Sundays after church for lunch maybe once a month.

The last two years have been hell for restaurant owners. BBQ joints have to feel it more because of the price of meat. You go to some of these places that charge by the pound especially up in central Texas/Hill Country and $28 or more for a pound of brisket. Yea Corpus and the Coastal Bend has a void in notable BBQ places unlike other parts of the state that make all of these top BBQ place lists. Butters in Mathis is the exception. Julianās by Del Mar has some decent grub too. But after that there is really nothing around anyone that makes a crowd line up at opening like many of the main stays upstate. Decent yes, but not show stopping.

He opted to leave Portland to concentrate on the one in Calallen. Joe's son Cecil bought out his nephew - Mike's cousin's share of the business but both were run and primarily owned by Mike.
