Brandeis hires Wagner's Charles Bruce as next head coach Charles Bruce, who was at Wagner for the last eight seasons, has been named head football coach at Brandeis, according to Northside ISD athletic director Stan Laing. Bruce replaces David Branscom, who left last month to become Allen’s defensive coordinator. Bruce coached the Thunderbirds to a 43-45 record, including two Class 5A state semifinal appearances in 2018 and 2019. Prior to that, Wagner was 13-37 in five seasons in Class 6A under Bruce. Bruce becomes the fourth coach since the Brandeis program began in 2008. He’s the third since John Campbell left for Madison after the 2014 season to be hired. Jeff Fleener was hired to replace Campbell after serving as the offensive coordinator at Allen where he coached Kyler Murray, who is now with the Arizona Cardinals. When Fleener left for Mesquite, assistant coach Branscom was named as Fleener’s successor. Efforts to reach Bruce for comment Tuesday were unsuccessful. Brandeis principal Geri Berger welcomed her school’s new football coach by tweeting: “Welcome to our Bronco Family, Coach Bruce!” Bruce, a former Judson standout as a player, enjoyed two fruitful seasons when the Thunderbirds dropped to 5A in 2018 and 2019. Wagner went 13-2 each season. The Thunderbirds lost to Alvin Shadow Creek each year — 41-28 (2018) and 45-21 (2019). Last season, the Thunderbirds were reclassified into 6A and went 4-4 in 2020. Wagner didn’t play a full schedule due to the pandemic but managed to advance to the playoffs, where it lost to Johnson in a 6A Divsion II first-round playoff. Branscom coached the Broncos for four seasons, leading them to a 37-10 mark and two 6A state quarterfinal appearances in 2018 and 2019. Brandeis is one of two Northside ISD programs — Clark being the other — that form District 27-6A with North East ISD’s seven football schools. Bruce’s departure leaves Wagner as the only head coach opening remaining in the area. www.mysanantonio.com/sports/high-school/article/Football-Brandeis-hires-Wagner-s-Charles-Bruce-16168482.php

This is a good hire I think for Brandeis. He is not only a very good coach but is also a great man.
Hope he does well there

I feel like the last two coaches at Brandeis had zero intentions of staying long, Brandeis was just a pit stop. I like what Bruce did at Wagner, Brandeis should be back to a hard nosed running team in no time. I still feel like their best squads were the running teams under Campbell, if not for Steele having monster teams beating them in the playoffs if feel like Brandeis could have had some very good runs in the playoffs. But heck thats when SA high school ball was a pretty tuff out lol.

I wonder who Wagner will hire as a HC? Will they go outside the district or promote from within?

As far as some of those Brandeis teams that Steele met and put out I couldn't agree more. The 2010 Brandeis team had they beat us in the 2nd round would have given SA Mac all they wanted in the regional finals and if they'd won that game would have played GUyer in the finals but likely lost....just not enough gas in the tank to beat that particular Guyer team that I still believe was their best to date. The 2011 team was IMO the 2nd best in the region and likely would have beaten PAM as well in the semis if that Bronco team beats a good Reagan team in the regional finals. Steele's defense was just really good that year and shut that Reagan offense down to nothing. 2016 was another year where I felt Brandeis was capable of winning the region if not for Steele and no doubt beating Cinco Ranch in the Semis if they did.

I’m just glad i got to see some of them monster Steele teams in person, saw them smack Brennan pretty good too when Brennan had a pretty salty team. That was a PHYSICAL game! We need SA football back on the map and I’m not sure its gonna be happening this next season.

There is still a ton of talent at a lot of schools but it is just not clicking for some reason or another. Lack of coaching is no doubt a part of it at some of them! Yes, I was there at the Alamo Dome that night of the Brennan/Steele game. That was my boy's freshman year and that Brennan team was BIG, fast, and well coached. I think Steele surprised em just a little bit that night and got physical with them really fast. I also think that Brennan's coach put way too much on his QB that night and didn't have a very good game plan offensively coming in. As good as that kid was Steele's DC was bound and determined not to let one man beat them.

Man, when you said this I started thinking about it a little harder and it had to be another game because I was wrong earlier, he was actually a sophomore that year of that 2nd round matchup with Brennan and he suited for that game but did not play. I remember that because I had a friend who had a step son on Brennan's team that was a Jr or Sr and played the D-line and I was hoping my son would get in and go up against him. So, it definitely had to be another game before that I guess.

Was it Brennan that was the opponent his freshman year?
