He has met with all the sports boys and girls. Introduced himself and gave expectations. I hear he has also already made his way to the Jr high and doing work with the younger kids already. Most kids are excited and a new energy has overtaken the kids here at G-P. A long road to success has to start somewhere. The kids hearts is the place to start. THat is a big first step. Getting the kids excited and generally that is not all that hard to do with the right words. Most great motivators do so without long winded speeches. They simply know the right words to say and what buttons to push. I suspect he may be one of these types. He definitely knows the words to say, but more importantly his own actions match the words he says. He walks the walk and talks the talk. I admire coach Davis because he holds himself to the same higher standard he holds his players and assistants too. If he tells a kid or coach that he expects them to do xyz, he also will expect himself to be able to do xyz. That to me is the most important motivation a true leader possesses.

Davis getting settled into his job and part of his job is getting coaches and athletes motivated. From what I’m hearing he definitely has got the current GP coaches motivated. I’m hearing he has all the coaches showing up early to make sure everyone knows exactly what he expects of them that day. I don’t think any current GP coaches would want to show up late. It’s just in the first week and he’s busy setting high expectations for athletes and coaches.

I think GP needs to prepare themselves for a down year next season. The only reason I say this is because this is how sometimes the first year of a total rebuild occurs. It's not pretty, but it's a necessary part of the process. This needs to be pounded into some who want instant success.

You might check out the new coach at Brownwood in 1960 and then when Coach Allman took over at Westlake. Down year with a new coach is not always the case but I think GP best not get their hopes to high. I think they have a lot of kids coming up that are weak at tackling and that has been the case for years. GP has 2 or more Running backs but neither are power runners like Devin Bisby. You have to block pretty good for these 2 guys. FB,VM,VW may be strong and the 4th slot up for grabs with VE. I don’t think it will take 4 years to see great results but I expect GP to be more competitive. Corpus may be doing some shuffling and things can change at CCISD. Pico is correct. Tamp down the expectations and have less disappointment.

There’s no doubt it’s going to take 2-3 yrs before we see significant change in the program. There’s a good group of boys coming up and last yrs freshmen and JV did well and it’s going to be interesting to see how they develop under Davis. I haven’t been able to go by and see if any other coaches are at GP yet. And Davis wants his staff assembled before spring football takes place. Anyone expecting to get in the playoffs and go 2-3 rounds next season is going to be severely disappointed. Let’s give the program some time to get going and then hopefully we can see some decent improvement in a couple years.

No where to go but up. But, yes first year will be tough.

My Question is who is hyping up that we are going to be great right off the bat? Everyone keeps saying to prepare for a 2-3 year rebuilding stint. Yes it will be about 2 years before we can even say playoffs again. We will see?

Jimmy Johnson was 1-15 his first year at Dallas.
So if GP goes 1-9. You mean we have to zip it. Lol.

Yes it will be about 2 years before we can even say playoffs again. We will see? I'm sure you have a few casual like fans who see a W/L record of a certain coach and expect the switch to be turned on right away at their new job. It can happen, it has happened... but it's the exception The upside for GP, IMO is the well is not entirely dry. What needs to occur is some shuffling of the cards such as moving some offensive talent to defense where you all have lacked the last few years. A better defense might allow you all to stay in games until the offense comes around under the new regime. You all are also not completely void of talent like Carrol and King have been the last few year, just maybe in come cases it's been not placed where it needs to be. I hope you guys get back into the mix sooner rather than later. As long as the current 5A remains as it is, I would rather see you and the Bluff fighting for 1 and 2 and let the Victorias and CCISD fight it out for the rest.

Last year mostly on defense they had elevated 3 freshmen up to varsity that did a good job replacing some injured players. A lot will depend on how well the new coaches help develop the athletes coming up from the freshmen and JV squads. I was surprised that Rhoades actually moved them up because he never did that before. There is some good young players moving up including some good sized linemen. There will be decent improvement in the next few years, how much depends on Davis and his program.

It will all come out in the wash next December. Steady leadership will improve GP year by year. Let the man go to work.
