Texas history says we hit our greatness just before we go 6a ha! What?? I did not realize this. Gregory Portland in 6A? Those are going to be some long drives. Y’all better hope you don’t get placed in the San Antonio district, because there is only one place for you there.. Converse Judson Cibolo Steele Schertz Clemens New Braunfels San Antonio Wagner San Antonio East Central South San Gregory Portland The other two SA district are west of the San Antonio power district. What’s the enrollment over there?

Day 2, Davis had the varsity locker room cleaned out even the seniors. Everyone has to earn their spot on Varsity and any athlete in the program not competing in another sport will be on track team. Guess we can expect a linemen’s relay this season.

Welcome Coach Davis to Gregory Portland. It’s certain that the GP that he remembered from the past is a much different program today. In the past GP under Akins was a solid run based offense that Akins ran to perfection. Now Rhoades like others tried to run the wide open spread offense that just never clicked at GP. Davis did open up a bit when asked what offense he wanted at GP? His answer spoke volumes, he said we will run the offense that fits the players at GP. It’s no secret that GP hasn’t had a good passing QB in years but they still tried to run the spread, that was a mistake. When GP finally had a decent passing GB he transferred out to Refugio. Basically the QB that Jack Rhoades spent two years coaching up his skills just bailed out and leaving GP scrambling. Gp needs to run what fits win more games and get back in the playoffs. That will help stop the transfers and keep the new move ins to GP. I already showed everyone that GP's biggest problem the past few years has not been offense...…..the defense has been worse.

Who’s been defensive coordinator since Harris retired? News Flash, All GP coaches have to reapply for their coaches job.

News Flash, All GP coaches have to reapply for their coaches job. I don't know and don't really care. I am referring to how much has been stated over the last couple of years by GP folks on here about how bad the spread offense has been for them. Though the GP offense may not have been world beaters the defense was even worse looking at the scoreboard. That is my point. Hopefully the first level of business for him will be to bring in a good DC and emphasize that side of the ball first and put some of the better athletes there!

Defense definitely needs work.
I think it’s a mistake to put all the top athletes on Offense. But it seems many coaches do exactly that.
I like the idea of cleaning out the varsity locker room. Make every kid earn it. Same with coaches.

I thought GP had some good solid athletes on offense... Defense lacked, especially the last two seasons.

A few exceptions do exist and most of those have multiple title trophies in their cases!

Reading the statements about the possible move to 6A in the future is interesting. The way other areas are through up schools and growing faster, I more so see the cutoff numbers going higher and higher. I would not be surprised to see schools with 2600-3000 kids be 5A the way some of these schools and areas are growing. One of my daughters is dating a GP guy, and he was talking about the growth in GP and how everyone is excited with the changes happening. That is good to hear the positive reception already to the changes being made. Good luck GP, it won't be long for Davis to get it fixed with his ways of doing things.

As far as GP going 6A that would be way down the road, possibly 10-15 yrs from now. Lots of things would have to happen by then and it’s not something that should concern anyone right now. It’s Day 3 and the towns buzzing that this coach is calling out the slackers and they for the first time in years are scared they could be let go. Fears a damned good motivator and coaches also must earn their spot just like the varsity.

I think it is called getting them out of their comfort zone. Could be GP has hired a Catalyst. A Catalyst are get-it-done-and-then-some people. Refugio got tired of hiring coaches who got mediocre results from very good talent players and hired a Catalyst. Winning teams have players who make things happen. Most teams don't naturally get better on their own. Left alone, they don't grow, improve, and reach championship caliber. Instead they tend to wind down. The Road to the next level is always uphill and if a team isn't intentionally fighting to move up, then it inevitably slides down. The team loses focus, gets out of rhythm, decrease in energy, breaks down in unity, and loses momentum. At some point, it also loses key players, and it't only a matter of time before it plateaus and ultimately declines into mediocrity. That's why a team that reaches its potential always possesses a catalyst.

He has met with all the sports boys and girls. Introduced himself and gave expectations. I hear he has also already made his way to the Jr high and doing work with the younger kids already. Most kids are excited and a new energy has overtaken the kids here at G-P. A long road to success has to start somewhere. The kids hearts is the place to start.

Getting the kids excited and generally that is not all that hard to do with the right words. Most great motivators do so without long winded speeches. They simply know the right words to say and what buttons to push. I suspect he may be one of these types.
