Hasn't Coach O been the defensive coordinator the last few years. Our defense has been a very weak spot for a long time. Maybe it's time for new blood and news systems. So damned silly, the DC Ouellette has stated many times that he absolutely has no interest of being a HC/AD. On the roster Andy is listed as the off. Line coach and Kilgore as the OC. I fully expect Rick to retire and move on after this season. A very serious thing happened at GP ever since Rick was hired. GP has been exposed as a community that does not support its football program adequately and it absolutely does not support its coaches. I’ve listened for years from the football braintrust at GP that they cannot win without running the Wing T offense. The old Wing Nuts will never back a program unless they implement that offense. They want a local favorite son to come back to GP to resurrect the glory days of WingT football at GP. Ain’t happening folks, that favorite son got a front row seat to see how the GP community treats its coaches and he’s got a damned good gig where he’s at right now. A good school that loves him, great support and a administration that lets him have control of his program. At GP he will have none of the things that makes his job as the HC/AD to be successful. GP has a new Supt for the first time in many years. We haven’t had a chance yet to see how she will support athletics. If and when a new coach comes to GP I hope he realizes what he’s stepping into before he signs a contract. Unless he has full control Over the program He would be crazy to sign on at GP. Wing T is history.

Au Contraire, Coach Matt Green at Llano has hired Coach Matt Anastacio a former center for GP in the Wing-T formation to build a defense for the Wing-T teams he will face. As for Coach Richard Ouelette who does not seem to understand defense of the Buc Sweep or Jet Sweep out of the Wing-T example Calallen for umpteen hundred yards, GP needs a new DC. When Bob Shipley became the Burnet High School head football coach and athletic director in 2001, he brought with him the spread offense, a scheme that emphasizes short passes to receivers in space, allowing for yards after the catch. At the time, the spread was just taking off. But more programs began adopting the scheme and playing for and winning state championships, including Southlake Carroll and Austin Lake Travis. Suddenly, the spread was all the rage. Shipley guided the Bulldogs to two consecutive Class 3A state runner-up finishes in 2002 and 2003. Carroll went 98-11 from 2000-06 and played for five state championships, winning four. Lake Travis won five straight state titles from 2007-11, setting a state record for the most titles won consecutively. All three teams used the spread during those runs, and it looked to be the offensive scheme of the future, one that coaches would use for years to come. But recently, offenses seem to be favoring another style, one that’s almost as old as the sport itself. Marble Falls, Llano, and Burnet head football coaches are preparing their defenses for slot-T and wing-T offenses, schemes that emphasize running and misdirection in an attempt to confuse the defense. The slot-T and wing-T date back to the early days of football, when offenses relied heavily on running. The T-formation is one of the base lineups: quarterback under center, fullback behind him, and halfbacks to the immediate left and right of the fullback. It also utilizes two tight ends. Coaches began tweaking the offense with the wing-T, which gained ground in the late 1930s and early 1940s. This scheme put one of the halfbacks, or wingback in this scenario, just off the line of scrimmage next to one of the tackles and added a wide receiver, or split end. The slot-T is a variation of the wing-T. Both offenses rely heavily on misdirection to confuse defenses. When ran effectively, it’s a deadly offense. In three pre-district games and one scrimmage, Marble Falls has defended the Slot-T three times. Mustangs head coach Mike Birdwell purposely scheduled opponents with that scheme, believing they’d see it in district competition. The Mustangs scrimmaged against Liberty Hill, which won state championships in 2006 and 2007 using the Slot-T offense that is taught to every child wanting to be a Panther. Former Liberty Hill head coach Jerry Vance brought the slot-T with him when he arrived at the school in 2001, and he never abandoned it. In his 16 years as the Liberty Hill head coach, Vance had a 155-46 record. His career record is 164-57. While other coaches and programs moved to spread offenses, Vance held with the slot-T up until his retirement in 2017. Already this year, Llano has faced three teams that favor the run: Luling with its slot-T, Brady and the wing-T, and Lago Vista’s triple-option. Burnet played Lockhart, a slot-T team, in preparation for Liberty Hill and Fischer Canyon Lake in District 14-4A Division II play. Marble Falls, Burnet, and Llano each run a version of the spread offense. Llano head coach Matt Green, a former offensive coordinator, and Burnet head coach Kurt Jones, a former defensive coordinator, offered insight on why it seems more teams are using these run schemes. Green believes some coaches see the type of athletes they have at quarterback and the other offensive players and install schemes that best suit those athletes. Most of them can run with the ball, they can hand the ball off, and they can run block. Not every player can complete a pass on a designed rollout or hit a receiver in the hands with the ball, he added. “It could be a quarterback-related issue throughout the program,” he said. It’s said that passing the football has one of three results, and two of them, incompletions or interceptions, are bad. But running the ball allows teams to control the clock, tire the defense, and keep the other team’s offense on the sideline. “We can hog the ball and run the clock and limit your possessions,” Green said. Jones believes it comes back to what coaches are comfortable using. “Schools look for a way to be successful,” he said. “You run block and see what you can grind out. You believe in it and coach it the right way, you can be successful.”

If ignorance is bliss, there must be a lot of blissfull people in this country. I believe that Coach at Ennis played QB for that legendary Coach at Brownwood and his aggressive players smacked a Aledo team around and even with less talent, took Aledo to the brink. We shall see if you think it is funny after this year . The Nina,Pinta,Santa Maria is alive and well at Ennis. I believe there is also a former Brownwood coach over at Highland Park. Keep a eye on that guy over at Llano. You can bet those players at Nacogdoches who have been in a losing program is now learning discipline and aggressive hard hitting football. That ancient program at Brownwood is still being copied today.

Some people just have a different opinion than you. Bringing up Brownwood almost every 5 or so post might be relevant in football history but not current history. Things change

THE GAME OF FOOTBALL MATTERS The game of football has come under attack in recent years. Whether bringing to light the misdeeds of certain individuals involved in the game (while ignoring the thousands whose behavior is exemplary) or over-publicizing the injury aspect of the game, it seems that the agenda of some of the public centers around the negative aspects of the sport. While, certainly, player/coach behavior is to be held to a high standard and injury prevention must be a priority, I am one who thinks football matters now more than ever. In a society with ever-lowering standards, a game that demands sacrifice, hard work, teamwork, and dealing with disappointment, is a key part of our nation’s future. There are thousands of success stories involving people in all walks of life who owe their path to lessons learned playing the game. The real value of football is not about preparing its players for an opportunity to play at the professional level. The overwhelming majority never play beyond the high school level. Rather, it is the relationships that players build with their teammates and coaches and the unique culture that the game of football exposes them to that makes football matter. Young men who otherwise may never have interacted are forced to learn to not only coexist with one another, but also to learn to excel together. In short, they learn that if it is going to get done, then they must work together. Race, socioeconomic status, and material possessions do not count when teammates are gasping for air in an off-season drill. When several are simultaneously hunched over a trash can, they don’t care about the background of the guy next to them. What kind of car one drives, what color one’s skin is, whether he is a friend or not, no longer matters. They learn that all vomit smells bad, no matter whose body it came from. Players learn, grudgingly at first, to respect one another and rely on one another for the whole team’s success. When the bullets are flying in the heat of a game, players want/need men beside them that they have seen pay a high price to be there. They need teammates that they are certain will compete fiercely. When Coach Rhoades took over at GP, he quoted the Philosophy of Coach Gordon Wood. "Coaches believing in Coaches and Coaches believing in Players and Players believing Players and Players believing in Coaches". You may have heard the same from former Brenham coach Glenn West. You may not be making headlines and be at a lower tier College like Midwestern University in Wichita Falls but former Llano QB Layton Rabb has been invited to the San Francisco 49's and Los Angeles Rams mini camp. He is 6 ft. 4 in and walked on at Midwestern.
