There was talk about 3rd or 4th place teams making strong playoff runs. I used the standard of making the region title game. Only one 3rd place team made a region final in 5AD2 in the last 10 seasons. Port Lavaca Calhoun was the team that accomplished the task in 2018. No 4th place team made the region finals.
W= District winner, R= District runner-up, T= 3rd place

Some notes:
- All 10 state title game winners won district - Region 3 is the only region that had a district runner-up make it to state (2) - Region 1 has the most state titles (4) - Region 3 has the most state title game appearances (6) - Cedar Park is the only team to win a title for region 4 (2)

That’s when all four playoff teams from D25 had the same record 8-2 and all 4 shared the District 25 Title. Three of the four teams made the Region IV title games in both 5a D1 & D2. That year they still picked D1/D2 schools by enrollment size after ranking the top 4 finishers. CP was the D2 D25W because they only lost 1 game between the top 4 teams and the others had lost 2 games along with CP being the 3rd largest school.

There is no doubt performance doesn't justify 4 teams. However, its a lot of fun for the kids and the communities that get one more shot at trying to pull it off. Its well worth it given the overall positive impact it has on communities.

I think its funny when people complain about too many teams being in the playoffs. This small sample size shows that the better teams are going to make it to the finals regardless of how many teams make the tournament. It doesnt water it down when all the teams you play deep in the playoffs are district winners! If you're worried about getting knocked out by a 3rd or 4th place team then I guess your team isnt that good anyways haha.

But Some of those third place teams knock out Winners or runner-ups enroot to the championship. Sure, but the counter point is those teams werent going to win it all anyways. So it really doesnt matter. Either get knocked out by a 3rd/4th place team or a 1st/2nd place team.

True but those teams could have upset another IF they hadn't got eliminated by a team that maybe shouldn't have beaten them. It only takes 1 game to change the complexion of the playoffs.

Here's an example, 2013 Playoffs. Calhoun (2 seed) Upsets Cedar Park (1 Seed). Who Thought that was going to happen. Answer NOBODY! And CP who was Expected to make the State Championship was done. Calallen DC. Had beat Calhoun 48-0 first week of District. But they lost to Alamo Heights. AH seeing what the Calallen team they just beat did to Calhoun got Beat By that Same Calhoun team By (I think) 22 points. Calhoun Lost to Brenham who Lost to Aledo in the finals. So If Cedar Park wins that game there's a Good Chance Aledo would Have played them instead of Brenham. 1 game changed the complete Playoff picture. Done here.
