Wanted to go back and rank the top 10 games from the 2019 D2 playoffs.
Honorable mention:
Huntsville 54 - Crosby 44: Lots of points scored in this 2nd round game between good teams!
El Paso Hanks 34 - El Paso Austin 14: El Paso Hanks previously had an overall playoff record of 1-12. Not only did they double their programs playoff win total but they did it over a district winner! Salute!
Canyon Randall 24 - Northwest 17: Randall went from 3-6 to the 2nd round. They made the 334 mile road trip and went home happy! This was one of the 4th place teams who beat a district winner.
10. Huntsville 35 - Marshall 12: The 4th place team from District 10 went to the District winner Marshall's home field and came away with a win in the first round. Huntsville was not your typical 4th place team. They missed their QB for a decent part of the season but were very formidable when he was healthy.
9. Wichita Falls Rider 56 - Wichita Falls 20: The battle for Wichita Falls. A very exciting time for the city having two of their teams make it to the 3rd round and play a game that would result in a region final appearance! The result on the field was not necessarily surprising but I bet the atmosphere was still electric.
8. Red Oak 35 - Denton Braswell 30: 2nd round playoff game between two very good teams! Red Oak built up a 28-7 halftime lead but Braswell battled back and tightened the game back up. Braswell had their first winning season and playoff win in program history. They started in 2016 playing varsity football and went 5-25 before this season.
7. Sharyland Pioneer 28 - Pflugerville Weiss 21: This is a 2nd round playoff game between two programs that both got their 1st playoff win in program history! This was the 2nd year playing varsity football for Weiss. They went 0-10 in their 1st season. What an incredible turnaround! The game was tied at halftime but Pioneer was a better team and advanced in the tournament.
6. Aledo 43 - Ennis 36 (OT): This game featured two programs that had a combined 13 state titles. At times it looked like Aledo would pull away but Ennis created turnovers and keep putting the pressure on! With 1:02 left in the game Ennis scored and had the opportunity to go for 2 and take the lead. They decide to kick the extra point and the
rest is history.
5. Boerne Champion 49 - Calallen 42: Any time you can beat Calallen in the region finals its a big deal, especially if it is your first time in program history to win in the 4th round! Calallen took a 14-0 lead in the 2nd quarter and then Champion scored on a blown coverage and 88 yards later they made the game 14-7. A blocked Calallen punt and BC takes advantage and ties it up not long after. Fast forward to the 3rd quarter and the game is tied again at 28. In the 4th quarter Champion opens up the scoring and takes a 41-28 lead. Calallen tries to make a comeback but ultimately cannot recover an onside kick and Champion salts the game away.
4. Aledo 28 - Lubbbock Cooper 21: Very impressive showing for Cooper knowing that this was their 1st semifinal appearance in program history! This was a close and hard fought game from the start. Lubbock Cooper played very well but did not get much production from their passing game. With about 2 minutes left, the game was tied and Aledo was about to score but fumbled the ball. Cooper recovered on their own 2 yardline but the refs missed the call and Aledo kept possession. The next play Aledo scored and thats all she wrote.
3. Fort Bend Marshall 32 - A&M Consolidated 27: I think early on people thought whoever won this game would end up making a very deep run and possibly end up in Arlington. This ended up be a very good game with A&M having one last chance for a game winning play. With time running down A&M had the ball around Fort Bend's 25ish yardline, the pass was slightly overthrown and the ball fell incomplete. Fort Bend Marshall won this heavyweight fight!
2. Boerne Champion 45 - Sharyland Pioneer 38 (OT): This game delivered in every way. Great atmosphere for a 3rd round game in the Almaodome! Both teams had very good QBs and high powered offenses. The game was a track meet for the most part then the defenses showed up towards the end and made the game interesting. Pioneer needed a couple of fortunate breaks to get back into the game and they got them. Going back and reading the thread it seemed like Pioneer had their opportunities. Dropped passes and not taking the field goal(s) made the difference. Wild game and a great learning experience for both programs.
1. Aledo 45 - Fort Band Marshall 42: This ranks #1 due to the historical significance. No 11 man txhsfb team has ever won 9 titles. This would be a rematch from the previous season but this game was much more competitive. Aledo was up multiple scores late but Fort Bend scored quickly twice and tightened the game up. They attempted an onside kick but could not recover. Aledo makes history.
