Every year there are coaching changes. Some high profile coaches take jobs at programs but dont stay long enough to actually build a successful program. My definition of success would be any program that is in the playoff hunt year after year. Making the tournament more often than not. So my question is how long does it typically take for a coach to build a successful program?

I think its more than just 1 coach being there. There needs to be a succession of coaches that pick up where the previous left off. Or maybe where 1 has been in place for a eternity and maintains the playoff run.
Whitaker has been at Calhoun since 2005 and missed the playoffs 3 times. Does this Qualify? If so then he was successful in 5 years. 4 out of the 5 were playoff years.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are programs. 1-3 years can sometimes be attributed to beginners luck if a new school opens and happens to tap in to a couple of talented classes when an ISD expands. I would say that the 4-6 years is about right for reaping the real good fruits but if it gets in to the 7-9 year range and beyond then you may end up being stuck right about where you are. There a lot of programs out there that end up in this category. It's no big secret that often times that's why coaches move on once they feel they've tapped their full potential with a program. Once they do move on the program is usually stabilized beyond what it was when they got there but the definition of success doesn't always equate to a state title or multiple titles. It also takes a little bit of luck along the way and many other factors as well.

I can't remember the stats at PLC when Coach Whitaker took over at PLC but it was bad and I mean real bad. Coach Whitaker has been real successful in rebuilding PLC. The number one ingredient for hiring a coach is his passion for the job. He has to be motivated and motivate people.

My cousin has recently started his new job at VE and he is a Head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He was formerly at Edna for 3 years and it shortens his drive to work everyday from Cuero. I have warned him about the coaching situation at Victoria. I know a school teacher who lived in Refugio and she left Victoria because of politics in the school. Victoria has a history of drinking and partying and might be a VE poster on here that can tell me if that has changed.

How long to build a program depends on the coach. Coach Gordon Wood at Brownwood one year. Coach Rhoades at GP is in his 5th year and may be getting there. He had a QB and RB and team with size last year and they were worse than the year before. He has now hired Coach Andy Smith to return to GP and might get the offense moving. GP has Gage Gleinig returning at QB and Dustin Madsen and Kaleem Gholsby returning at RB and Isaiah Chandler returning at WR. Hopefully they will change from the spread to a run first offense. I hate watching a lineman in the spread slow the defense down by getting pushed backward slow enough to let the QB get rid of the ball.

In an ideal situation where politics are taken out the equation, 3-5 years. But depending on the ISD/City the arm chair QB's and keyboard warriors such as some who even post here whom might want success much earlier will not stand for anything more than three years. Really you have to develop the program on two fronts. The first is what you have in front of you at the high school. If the program has been stuck in the mud of mediocrity or losing for the long term, you have to change the culture as fast as you can. If your facilities suck, a good coach would insist on upgrades occurring as soon as he is hired or be put in the pipeline sometime with in his first year on the job. Thus the school board has to be all on board and rally the community to embrace bonds and whatever other methods to get those needs done. The coach also needs to be engaged in the community via the different youth leagues and other organizations to build support and good will if anything to buy time to get his checklist done. Explain what you are doing and use the frequently used phrase about trusting the process. The other front is the feeder system which really has to flipped quickly. If you are in an ISD that has multiple high schools and with middle schools, you almost have to insist you have the right to call the shots with those feeder school where you will get the majority of your players. It should be a much easier task in a one high school town or ISD. The above discussion with youth league involvement will help to move this along because kids and their parents will be eager to have their kids get into XYZ middle school where they can start learning Coach Awesome's system. I think I've seen this work somewhere? Just can't think where right now..

Whitaker got there in 05 and was 2-8 the first year, He has over 100 wins there now. I moved back in 04 and left in 2019.

I can tell you my daughter graduated last year from East and there was no drinking and parting but canβt speak for every kid all schools have them kids. If your Cousin started coaching basketball at East he will meet my nephew he will be a Junior next year and he averages about 15-20 points a game he plays strictly basketball wish he played football he would make a great QB.
