Coach Ricky Lock duplicated what a Coach over at Port Lavaca did years ago. Coach Richard Whitaker took over a losing team that had not made the playoffs since 1961. They had played in the state title game the year before. Coach Whitaker took over and had a tough first year and went 2-8 and he met with parents and recruited players and got them to buy in to his philosophy. PLC has been a competitor every since and was recently voted most underated Coach in Texas by Dave Campbell Mag.

Ricky did very well in 2 separate stints at Gonzales. Bet they would take him back if possible.

I hope Lock stays with SS for awhile. I think what he has done is nothing short of a miracle. Their program is lacking numbers . The athletes they have gone with have been well developed and play with fire, that’s good coaching and good player development. If Lock could get more kids out for football I think this is a program that would go more than one or two rounds deep. Just my thoughts.

I’m shocked that Southside has done as good as it has with basically the demographics of the inner city San Antonio schools. I guess they will be one of my go-to schools to root for this upcoming year.

I agree Coach Lock has done a fantastic Job at SS. And everywhere else hes been. But IMO the article is a touch over the top. I don't think anyone is intimidated by SS. And they have 1 playoff win. Not exactly the juggernaut that the article makes them out to be.

It maybe be happing now but in the next few years it will blow up. It's mostly undeveloped farm land. The Northside is getting landlocked and high priced. Downtown is getting a make over so hopefully that helps SAISD In the years to come.

I've only seen Southside play twice and that was when they faced Calallen. Both times those kids put up a fight. Whatever Lock did at Southside should be a seminar topic at the coaching schools because it probably can be replicated at other schools who have the same demographic issues. My guess is a lot of the work he did was done off the football field in so far as getting the community to buy in and then the other half was in so much finding the right pegs to fit in the correct holes.

I expect SS to be back in the playoffs the next 2 years at least. Hopefully that will get more kids out for football and other sports as well.

I saw PLC play SS this last year and my biggest takeaway was SS needs more kids, especially in the trenches. They’ve got the skill players but need depth and a couple of Dudes in the trenches. PLC had some Dudes!

It’s busting at the seams and still going.
