Ok, It was families only at the scrimmage, so I’m piecing this together based on what parts I saw from a CP fan streaming via Facebook and someone I know and trust that was there.
Controlled part Both QBs in Red and were one hand touch only
Score: Cedar Park 14* Westlake 10 (*Should be 21; TD pass was called back. Ref said QB down, but replay shows ball left hand before whistle)
Live Scrimmage (1-12:00 Qtr.) Both QBs in Red but we’re allowed to be tackled.
Score: Cedar Park 7 Westlake 7
My Thoughts... Offense: CP’s passing game will be setting records this year as QB Ryder Hernandez was spot on with their short passing game and was also able to scramble to extend plays! Our Receiver corps is probably the best in Central TX... based on how well I saw them run patterns and them finding open areas if their pattern was well covered. We also had a surprise WR Move in from Colorado which only adds to an already stellar group! CP’s running game and run blocking looked better at this point in the year than in years previous, but still needs more work IMHO. RB Kevin Adams needs to trust in his abilities and just put his head down and drive over people rather than trying to pick a hole. He’ll be something very special that CP hasn’t seen in awhile at RB.
Defense: CP’s Black Rain front 7 will be very tough again this year especially against the run. The pass defense or DBs need some work but that area we all knew was going to be the weakest link due to graduattion. The DBs however held their own against what is a Westlake pass heavy Dodge offense! CP’s pass rush will again be nasty!
Overall, if CP can stay healthy and avoid serious injuries and or Covid, I’m very optimistic about this season.
Go TWolves!

Here are the CP Highlights of the CP @ Westlake scrimmage last Friday. This video was produced by Fanstand ATX. The new move-in from Colorado is WR #19 Sr. Jack Hestera. I'm sure we'll be seeing some good things from him this year as well!

Great Video! I’m sure one of our own did this for the team as he always goes above and beyond for this program. Very well done, I’m glad they are able to show games this year can’t wait to to watch those boys get nasty with those boys from down the road. I’m very excited for this season especially with it being Coach’s sons Senior year. I remember him being a fixture with the program since I got there as a freshman, crazy how fast we all age. I hope the whole team finds as much success as we believe they should find! LETS GO BOYS FINISH THIS FIGHT!! GO TWOLVES!!

Hernandez, defense carry Cedar Park in victory over Vandegrift
CEDAR PARK: It was a warm and dry Friday night at Gupton Stadium, but the rain never stopped.
Cedar Park’s defense, which bills itself as Black Rain, was in midseason form during a 21-7 victory over rival Vandegrift. While the Timberwolves had their moments on offense, too, it was the defensive unit that showed why the Timberwolves will be tough to beat in 2020.
While junior linemen A.J. Williams and Ian Ferguson did most of the heavy lifting in the trenches, senior linebacker Javion Mays was spectacular, creating big plays and sacking first-year Vandegrift starting quarterback Ryan Back twice.
“I introduced him to varsity football,” Mays said after the opening game of the season for both teams.
This marked the first time Vandegrift lost a regular-season game since 2017. It also snapped Cedar Park’s two-game losing streak to the Vipers. Cedar Park senior quarterback Ryder Hernandez, shaking off a slow start, completed 20 of 24 passes for 250 yards and two long touchdown tosses. Hernandez, though, said the offense did not play to its potential and gave credit to the defense for its performance.
“We have the best defense in the state and that helps our offense because we get to see them three days a week in practice,” said Hernandez, who has accepted a scholarship offer to play baseball next year at Texas State.
Vandegrift running back Bowen Lewis had a solid night, rushing for a game-high 97 yards on just 10 carries. His 65-yard run in the second quarter set up his team’s lone touchdown, a 5-yard touchdown pass from Back to Jaxon Oliver.
The rest of the game was dominated by the Black Rain defense.
“Our D-line, our defense in general gets after you,” veteran Cedar Park coach Carl Abseck said. “We’re blessed up front with guys who play exceptionally hard and can rush the passer and stop the run. They’re do-it-all guys who play hard for four quarters.”
With limited practice in the spring and summer, both teams came out flat. Any rust Cedar Park might have had vanished when the TWolves scored a pair of touchdowns during a two-minute stretch midway through the second quarter.
After Back’s touchdown pass gave the Vipers a 7-0 lead, Cedar Park roared back behind Hernandez, who completed 13 of 14 passes for 155 yards in the first half, including a 44-yard touchdown dart to senior wideout Josh Cameron.
Cedar Park’s defense contributed one of the game’s biggest plays when senior safety Casyn Wiesenhutter intercepted a Back pass at midfield on Vandegrift’s ensuing possession.
The quick-strike TWolves took advantage of the turnover by turning it into a touchdown drive, capped by a three-yard run by senior Cade Haught with 3 minutes left in the second quarter to give Cedar Park a 14-7 lead at the break. Hernandez would complete the scoring with a 46-yard pass to senior Preston Scott in the fourth quarter.
With the victory, Cedar Park, a Class 5A team, improved its record over Class 6A teams to 24-8 since 2010. The Timberwolves’ all-time record is 190-70, but there is room for improvement — particularly on offense — the coach said.
“We probably shot ourselves in the foot four times and maybe you can blame that on the first game,” Abseck said. “We’re going to be really explosive when we clean it up.”
Up next for Cedar Park is Round Rock Cedar Ridge.

Ryder Hernandez shines in Cedar Park win over Cedar Ridge
Austin American Statesman by Colby Gordon
When you play Cedar Park, you know what you’re going to get. It’s just a matter of whether you can do anything about it.
To Cedar Ridge’s credit, the Raiders played solidly on defense and did some nice things on offense to hang around against the Timberwolves Friday at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex. But in the end, Cedar Park star quarterback Ryder Hernandez threw for 346 yards with four touchdowns and the Timberwolves defense had nine sacks during a 28-14 win.
“We know we have a really good team, and we have (big goals),” said Hernandez, who spread his touchdowns around to four different receivers while completing 21 of 31 passes. “It’s just us coming out every week and putting to work what we’ve been doing in practice all week and executing. If we execute, I don’t feel there are too many teams in the state who can stop us.”
A week after opening the season with a 21-7 win over Vandegrift, the Timberwolves beat a perennial Class 6A playoff team for the second straight week, and the scary part for District 11-5A Division I is that Cedar Park’s coaches think there is still room for improvement.
“We played well at times, and then there’s other times where we left a lot of opportunities on the field,” Cedar Park coach Carl Abseck said. “Cedar Ridge is a really good football program ... but I feel like we have a lot more in the tank. If we can clean up mistakes and some inconsistencies, we’ll be a really good football team.”
The Raiders would probably argue Cedar Park was a really good team Friday, especially the Timberwolves’ front seven, which constantly had Cedar Ridge quarterback Joaquin Sandoval under pressure.
“This was their first live game, and I’m not sure they were ready for what was coming,” said Cedar Park senior defensive lineman Hunter Hewitt, who played a factor in several of the team’s nine sacks. “As a defense, our confidence is high because we push ourselves every day in practice. We feel we’re in better condition than our opponents and just try to tear them down so they get tired before us.”
Cedar Ridge, though, stayed competitive the whole game and wasn’t out of it until Hernandez’s scrambling 61-yard touchdown pass to Jack Hestera midway through the fourth.
“I thought we played aggressive and made some good things happen on both sides of the ball,” Cedar Ridge coach Sam Robinson said. “But we also made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball, and Cedar Park is too good of a team to do that against and still come out with a win.”
Hernandez hit Gunnar Abseck for a 13-yard TD to cap off a 61-yard drive and open the scoring on the Timberwolves’ first drive of the game. Cedar Ridge answered with a 74-yard touchdown march, with Dylan Morello sprinting 37 yards up the middle to tie the contest. Hernandez threw scoring passes of 16 yards to Preston Scott and 42 yards to Tristan Hervey in the second quarter, the latter of which was also a play that broke down and saw Hernandez scramble out of the pocket.
“On both the touchdowns where I was flushed out of the pocket, our wideouts did a great job of getting back to me and finding the open spots in the defense,” Hernandez said.
Meanwhile, the Cedar Park defense clamped-down until late in the third quarter, when the Raiders got back within 21-14 on Joseph Captain’s 2-yard touchdown plunge. However, Cedar Ridge never threatened to score the rest of the way and Hernandez’s long connection with Hestera sealed the Timberwolves’ win. Hestera finished with seven catches for 145 yards while Gunnar Abseck hauled in seven passes for 102 yards for Cedar Park, which opens District 11-5A Division I with a massive game against Georgetown Friday.
“You have to feel good heading into district play after beating two good Class 6A teams,” Carl Abseck said. “Offensively, though, we do have to clean up some stuff. But I think we’re real close to putting up a lot of points.”
DJ Rountree led Cedar Ridge (0-1) with seven catches for 114 yards, with Morello adding 96 yards on the ground and Sandoval passing for 185 yards. After just one game, the Raiders jump into District 25-6A play next week against Round Rock.
“I’d like to have another game, but Cedar Park is a good team to get us ready for a tough district,” Robinson said. “For the first game out tonight, I saw a lot of good things from our team. Once we get those first-game mistakes out of the way, I feel like we have a chance to be all right. We have new players all over the place, but the kids were ready to play, and I think we showed some talent.”
Next up Georgetown
