Austin American Statesman by Colby Gordon
Preseason Top 10 Austin Area HS Football Teams*
Rank | Team | 1 | West Lake | 2 | Cedar Park | 3 | Lake Travis | 4 | Vandegrift | 5 | Lampasas | 6 | Austin LBJ | 7 | Liberty Hill | 8 | Dripping Springs | 9 | Vista Ridge | 10 | Wimberly |
* Based upon AAS writers (think readership)
Anyway, here is an article they ran when they appointed Cedar Park as the #2 team in the Austin area. (IMHO, I'm not sure we're above LT but hey that's a first being given to us by the AAS.)
2020 High School Football Preview: Hernandez wants wins, not headlines, for No. 2 Cedar Park
Since being forced into starting action as a sophomore, Cedar Park quarterback Ryder Hernandez has put up back-to-back solid seasons. The Timberwolves were regional semifinalists last season and want more in 2020.
Ryder Hernandez doesn’t mind the lack of attention. And for a quarterback who’s entering his third year of starting at Class 5A power Cedar Park with more than 5,600 yards passing and 70 touchdowns to his name, there’s been surprisingly little.
- No stars next to his name on recruiting sites.
- No scholarship offers from any FBS schools.
- No big-time profiles in the media (until now)...
In fact, outside of the Ameirican-Statesman, one could argue that for a quarterback with his numbers, Hernandez has almost been ignored. But if there’s anyone who is concerned at what seems to be a puzzling set of circumstances, it isn’t Hernandez. “I’m not worried about comparing myself to other guys, I’m just worried about winning a state championship,” Hernandez said. “I’m actually used to (being overlooked) and just put my head down and go to work.” Hernandez enters what should be another strong campaign for the Timberwolves with a chance to rewrite the school passing records. He already set the mark for most completions in a season a year ago, and the career records for yards and touchdowns should be his if he keeps up his current trajectory.
Timberwolves coach Carl Abseck said there’s little Hernandez can’t do from the quarterback position. “He can make all the different throws we ask him to do, he can run and he can extend plays,” Abseck said. “He’s a smart kid who can make adjustments and understands what we’re trying to do offensively. That puts him in a good position for success.”
Taking over quarterback duties in the third week of his sophomore season after an injury pressed him into action, Hernandez hasn’t looked back. He threw for 2,543 yards and 26 touchdowns that year while going 8-2 as a starter and winning a playoff game. Last fall, he torched defenses for 3,098 yards and 34 scores as Cedar Park went 11-2 and reached the regional semifinals.
All along, there’s been a progression in Hernandez both as a player and a leader. “Sophomore year, I was more of a quiet guy, led by example, and on the field was just getting my feet wet,” he said. “Junior year, I become more vocal and got more comfortable in the pocket. This year, I’ve got those two years under my belt and I’ll use all those tools to put it together for one last run. I’ve known all these guys for four years and know what makes them tick, so I’ll try and lead in different styles for what is effective to each guy.”
Big things should be in store again for Hernandez this fall. Four of his top five wide receivers — including statistical machines Josh Cameron and Gunnar Abseck — return and the Timberwolves welcome back Luke Williams and two other starters on the offensive line. The Cedar Park defense — known as “Black Rain” — also brings back seven starters and a plethora of experience, highlighted by linebacker Shelby Battles and defensive end Hunter Hewitt. A point of pride for the program, it keeps pressure off Hernandez and the offense from having to win shootouts. “The tradition we have on defense is what lends us to playing well,” Abseck said. “The kids want to uphold that and do what’s been done before you and that’s a big deal. I think we have a couple holes to fill, but I think we have kids that are ready to step up.”
Expectations are high at Cedar Park, and they should be. It’s somewhat rare for a program as traditionally strong as the Timberwolves to have this many starters back on both sides of the ball, and that’s evidenced by their No. 2 ranking in the Statesman’s preseason top 10. “We have a really good group back who have physically matured,” Abseck said. “They’re athletic, talented and have the experience. As coaches that gives you confidence that if we put a good game plan together we can win every game we can play.”
Hernandez marks the key in all of that.
Though he ended his junior year without a scholarship offer from any school, Hernandez finally received one in December from Texas State ... for baseball. As talented on the diamond as he is on the gridiron, Hernandez accepted and committed to the Bobcats. But he said he’s keeping an open mind for football going forward. A dual-sport athlete his entire life, Hernandez has always aimed to play at the highest level, no matter which sport.
At last, football scholarship offers from FCS schools started arriving in late March, and a big senior year may bring attention from bigger schools. Not that he’s particularly worried about that at the moment. “I just keep working and do what I need to do to go out there and keep winning,” Hernandez said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter about numbers or college offers, the only thing that matters is the scoreboard.”

Short and sweet video... not many of us had any idea just how good the TWolves were going to be with the coaching changes until we actually got into the season... but it was the perfect season 16-0!
