I see what they are complaining about. The competitiveness of these teams. Last year eastside memorial suited up 19 players and only scored 6 points the whole season and that was against Bandera. These charter schools don’t field JV or freshman teams either. Now Wimerberley and Navarro have to find teams to play which is hard to do. Just no competition out of these Charter schools. OK, I do get that but it is not like they have 8 district games and 7 are against weak competition. They can schedule 5 non-district opponents so they should go out and get 3-4 really tough ones. Hell, schedule up a level or two and get your weaknesses pointed out early then use the weak district schedule to coast, rest up, and heal up. Both these programs have it going on well and have very good numbers so using the old excuse that not being able to play our starters 4 quarters is hurting us for the playoffs, To me that is BS because you can simulate 4 quarters during practice if you really want to! Well... At least this is a change from what some schools do to avoid playing tougher competition like the Laredo ISD thought about doing a few months ago. SMH www.lmtonline.com/local/politics/article/Laredo-ISD-mulls-lawsuit-against-UIL-over-14881502.phpBut yes, if you can't control part of your schedule you can certainly control some of it by scheduling some traditional power team or even a class up or two to fill the void. Refugio finally did this in someways to deflect some of the criticism they were getting ( and rightfully so) for running up the score on some very horrible teams in district. So they started scheduling teams they might even meet in the playoffs such as Shiner, Mart, etc.

Calhoun has 2 JV and 2 Freshman teams. They usually are looking for games for the B squads.

This is definitely a huge feather in the cap of the coaching staff, kids, and parents of PLC...…..as well as a big advantage over many schools with the same enrollment! Well done.

Those Sub varsity teams only have 25 or so players. But everyone that suits up plays. The numbers thin out a little as they move up but I think that happens everywhere.

Still, this is very, very good Hh! I remember my son playing Freshmen against Wagner back in 2013 and we fielded two freshman teams. A team carried only about 24 or so and the B team carried about 40. Wagner only had one team and they suited up less than our A team did. That was a Wagner school that had 300-400 more enrolled students than Steele at the time. There were a few others that were even larger than them that only carried an A team for 9th grade at that time or if they had B teams then they had very few backups on each team and some of those kids went both ways. To have the kind of numbers PLC does participating for the enrollment is very, very good for sure.

We came to play Killeen Ellison. Our Freshman A&B teams had 24 each, Ellison had A,B,C,D,E,and F teams. When they were stretching they used the entire field. They had over 130 kids on the freshman teams. Our freshman A team won 77-0 and played their A,B,C teams combined, our B team won 70-6 and played their D,E,and F teams. Our JV A&B teams had 24 each to their 100+ kids and beat them 56-0 and 63-0. We ran the slot T offense, and our Freshman A team scored on the simple dive trap play 6 times in a row. Literally ran it 1st down on 6 consecutive possessions. All 50+ yard runs. During warm ups their coaches asked us where the rest of our kids were, we were like that's it just 48 kids total in each division. They asked if we cut kids, we were like nope this is what we got. They were like wow, y'all sure y'all want to play? We asked how many kids do y'all have? They were like too f-ing many, and told us they had over 130 freshman and over 100 JV. After the games, they were like can we go back with you guys? Lol...

My kid's 7th grade year at Dobie MS (Steele's Feeder) was 2011 which was the year after they won state. There were just about 500 kids in that 7th grade class and they had nearly 200 boys play football that year. They had an A team that carried 28, a B team that carried about 50, and the rest were on the C team. I felt really bad for the boys on that C team as they didn't even have a real 8 game schedule. Of course about 1/2 of those kids quit before the end of that year anyway but still. By the time they were freshman they had about 65 kids left playing which was a little over average for us. I believe their senior year there were 52 of them which was very big senior group at Steele

For 52 to stay as seniors means a lot! When I graduated from TM in the 90s, we had 38 kids on varsity, 32 of us were seniors. That was after 20 kids from our class quit after our junior year. Needless to say the next year for TM was rough lol...
