GPfannie55 you never miss a chance to not make a contribution with your post. I made a flattering observation on this lady and at the end I put Athletics and a ? mark and no I do not know her attitude toward athletics. You know SENILE I was actually enjoying your post about the new Superintendent until you had to add the comment about intelligence being in short supply at GP. You just can't seem to resist the negative comments. Weren't you one of the people who claimed GP would just hire from within and continue the same ole anti athletics policy? Guess the non intelligent people at GP had you fooled???

Clem I think they had the talent to make the playoffs with better coaching. Players learn to tackle in Junior High and these players were weak tacklers and that has been a problem at GP for over 20 years and they have about the same coaches in Junior High for the last 20 years . You don't need size to tackle on defense but size helps on offense. It was hard to watch near 300 pounders on offense getting shoved backwards into their QB. GP had Joey Sauceda that squats over 600 pounds and a tough kid that racked up 150 yds the year before on Calallen. You need some form or attempt of balance. GP was pass happy on Alice and scored one TD. Fooled on a fake punt. They had lost a tall receiver because he did not know how to tackle and he really was not physical built to play defense or make a tackle. He was a tall good looking kid, polite and good personality and losing him in basketball most likely what caused GP to miss basketball playoffs. I have a picture in my senile mind of GP trying to arm tackle that kid from PLC. You don't have to have size to make a tackle. Bridge City won the coin toss and elected to receive. The Red and White team returned the kickoff to the 39. Standing 6 ft tall and 210 pounds and clocking 10.5 in the 100 yard dash, Steve Worster was a 2 time all state and vicious runner. He had rushed for 1,293 yds and scored 22 touchdowns. On the first play Steve Worster took the handoff from Redbird QB Joe Langston and started around right end. Worster turned to cut upfield and Lion cornerback Roy Spence ,who did not weigh over 155 pounds came flying in and hit him at the knees and you could hear it all over the stadium. That defense gang tackled Worster before he reached the line of scrimage and he ended the game with 24 carry's for 84 yds. Bridge City was a 3 touchdown favorite. Brownwood 14 Bridge City 0. Fair enough I asked because I've not seen GP in person in several years now but I know back when I saw them I didn't see a lot of size or speed outside of just a couple of kids. I did see a group that played with heart though that nigh in SA. I do agree with you that the basics have to be taught in 7th and 8th grade. If you set the ground rules and teach the fundamentals there, it certainly helps when they get to HS. The one think Mike Jinks did an outstanding job on was making wholesale changes in his MS staffs when he started the program at Steele. He was very, very hands on with what happened daily at the middle school and by the time those kids stepped on the field at Steele for the first time in August their freshman year they knew EXACTLY what was expected of them. I feel like this was one of the biggest keys there was in what he built in a few short years there. I miss it!

Come on guys Enough with the personal stuff. I think you both want the same thing for GP and would like to see them back in the race year after year. 37, I know you are frustrated...we all know you are frustrated. Maybe you could tone it down with the negativity just a tad? It comes out in a high percentage of your posts and I can see why it has some of the other GP posters a little heated...……...especially those that have kids in the program. We all want to see our local kids attain as much success as possible and it is frustrating as hell when it doesn't happen. Trust me when I say I get that. Come watch one game in our seats and then see if you have as much to complain about on the sidelines as you think you do!

Clem, if I had to pick one area of concern it’s exactly what’s gone on for years at GP is that the kids in the jr high are not getting taught the basic skills adequately. That one issue unbelievably has stayed the same for decades at GP and nothing basically has changed at GP. That is what many of us has stated over the years no fundamental change has occurred in that vital area. Yes there have been a few coaches come and go but the core coaches are still running the show at Jr high. That’s why we get frustrated and people like us come in here at vent off frustration every year. I just have a hard time grasping the idea that a coach like Rhoades came to GP and got body slammed when he wanted to rebuild GP especially at that critical area, the foundation of a program at the jr high. I see people every single year go thru the same old routine that spit out player that are not 100% prepared to enter high school football and every year it shows up with unremarkable results. The parents see it and the fans see it in every game but nothing has changed at the Jr high level and it just drives some folks away from GP. Every year we see good athletes leave GP to other programs through tout the state and play well. I just hope this new Supt is strong enough and smart enough to tackle this seemingly endless cycle of mediocrity that has taken hold and allows Rhoades to make those sorely needed changes that have to be done to fix this once and for all.

That is a damn shame for sure. If coaches are spending time teaching basic BS to HS players which they should have already known there is a lot of valuable time being wasted for sure. I can tell you that even though Mike Jinks departed between my son's 8th grade year and freshman year each and every one of those boys new exactly what was expected of them the first day of practice their freshman year! They knew the routines and exactly how it ran because they utilized the exact same system at middle school. I hope the new Super holds her ground and does what it takes no matter how many of the 'old GPrs' scream!

Humor for the day: I mentioned Roy Spence in above post and Coaches had told Coach Gordon Wood that Steve Worster could not be tackled and it would take 3 men to bring him down. It only took 155 lb Roy Spence. Roy Spence sent me a video of the Documentary he made shown on TV of Brownwood Football and a autographed book he wrote "The 10 essential Hugs OF LIFE".

In Rhoades case he’s come to a crossroad at GP With the support from the new Supt I could see him staying on a few more years, but without that support to make critical changes I just don’t see him staying very long. Only time will tell which road is in Coach Rhoades future at GP.

That is not just a piece of cloth on that stick. While I agree with 37 that it’s not just a piece of cloth on a stick, I also agree with Cochino in that I don’t think that’s is why GP has not made the playoffs in several years. True ! Rhoads ended that alone

I’M a little surprised they selected an outsider. But some new blood may be good. One potential drawback to an outsider is they may just use the GP job as a springboard to a larger district. Good news for us over here at Rockport. Open doors for our program

Dr. Diane Michelle Cavazos is fluent in Spanish and even has taught Spanish. She recently got her PhD at Texas State. She grew up in the valley. She has been married twice and divorced twice and has 3 children, The poster who went to school in Harlingen might know her. She is strong on science. She has been teacher and principal at a lot of different schools. I suspect she will be strong on academics. She writes poetry and you can buy her books on Amazon. She appears to be intelligent which is in short supply at GP. Athletics?, Way to go Senile37, never miss a chance to get in a negative shot at GP. YOU'RE IN MID-SEASON FORM. GPfan55 you can come watch games with me this year down the road. At least you can enjoy a good game.
