More proof this area gets overlooked the #1 rushing fullback in the nation (as reported by maxprep) this year has been largely overlooked by d1 schools. Nowadays it seems the college recruiters seem to put more weight into the big time off-season camp performances than they do in watching what a kid actually does with a helmet strapped up and mouth piece in! Hell, you have 15 year olds go to a big camp and put up eye popping numbers in the 40, vertical, shuttle, etc and they get offers from power 5 schools that very day yet that same kid hasn't even played a damn down of varsity FB yet! It happens all the time and I've seen it first hand with a kid a Steele a few years ago. If I was a college coach I'd have Johnson on my team in a NY second! He can straight up play and gets after it.

LEAVING A LEGACY Calhoun quartet leaves legacy of success on National Signing Day
PORT LAVACA — Most athletes dream of playing at the collegiate level but never get the opportunity.
On National Signing Day, Calhoun had four athletes accomplish the dream as cross country runner Emme O’Donnell and football players Steve Johnson, Jarius Stewart and Aaron Zapata all signed their National Letters of Intent.
Together they broke records at Calhoun and all four leave behind legacies of success with the Sandcrabs.
“We have multiple athletes doing different things in different sports,” Johnson said. “It’s an amazing feeling knowing that we’re actually doing something here in South Texas and we have something special going on.”
Calhoun athletic director Richard Whitaker was quarantining after four coaches tested positive for COVID-19, but his absence did not take away from the festivities.
Emme O’Donnell, who plans to study biology, signed with Dallas Baptist University after being arguably the most dominant cross country runner in the area for the past three years.
She won every district race she ran in since her sophomore year and qualified for state three years in a row. As a senior she took silver in the 4A girls two-mile run with a time of 11 minutes, 35.55 seconds.
In track & field she has qualified for state twice in the 1600m and 3200m and still has one more season to play.
“I think it’s a blessing that all of us are great athletes and we can go on to the next level,” O’Donnell said. “I hope we all represent Calhoun well and I think we have done that in our time at high school.”
Johnson signed with Lamar University, Stewart with the Air Force Academy and Zapata with Texas Lutheran University.
The trio represent a group that went 33-14 in four years, made the playoffs three years in a row, won a district title and advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2018.
“At Air Force, I felt like I’m going to be able to compete at the highest level athletically and academically,” Stewart said. “What I’m going to miss the most is the brotherhood, playing with my best friends since I was five, six years old.”
Johnson and Zapata will study mechanical engineering and sports medicine respectively, while Stewart is undecided on his major.
“I went up there on Monday and it’s just a great school, I’m living the dream right now,” Zapata said. “I’m going to miss playing with my two best friends. I’m going to miss that a lot.”
Stewart and Johnson picked up accolades during their senior seasons. Notably, Stewart was named Fort Tough Player of the Week and Johnson was selected to the 2020 Whataburger Super Team.
Johnson graduates as Calhoun’s record holder in career rushing yards (6,858), touchdowns (73) and games played.
All of them created memories at Calhoun that they will never forget.
“We had an amazing atmosphere at Calhoun and it was something really exciting that you couldn’t miss,” Johnson said. “You had that feeling running out of the tunnel just seeing the stands packed. I’m just going to miss the city of Port Lavaca.”

Week 4. Sept 17 Calhoun Vs Bryan Rudder @ Merrill Green Stadium. I cannot wait for this game. I normally sit on the Home side for non-playoff games in MGS. But will be on the Visitor side for this one. Might be the last I see Calhoun play live. Been to quite a few games here watching Rudder and Bryan High.
Anyone having Questions about getting to Merrill Green Stadium, I will help out the best I can.

Looking at Calhoun Varsity Roster on Maxprep. It was at 35 Varsity Players, at last check it is now at 40 with 6 of those being Sophomores. I cannot remember when Calhoun had that many Sophs on Varsity before. Add that to no JV Black Schedule/ team for this season and I'd guess the participation numbers are down from previous seasons. Could be the lower enrollment catching up to the football program or not as many kids wanting to play football. Either way it surprises me a little.

It's definitely concerning from the outside looking in Salty. Participation numbers have always been a strong point for Sandcrab Football. For a couple seasons, several years back the freshman classes had 70+ players. Not the case anymore I guess. Bringing up Big guys on the line is both Good and Expected. I also Expect a SR QB Again. Even with a Jr and Soph listed on the Varsity Roster. Will just have to wait and see. Does anyone know how the Scrimmage went?

I am hearing the student numbers are down who knows maybe Calhoun drops to 4A D11 next realignment. The starting QB will be Jacob Laughlin he has been starting at safety since he was a sophomore was the backup QB last couple years I would have loved to seen him start last year and Stewart at HB instead of QB but Stewart had a great year at QB. I have not heard anything about the scrimmage with yoakum I do know Calhoun will have two big linebackers this year and good size on the defensive line.

If they are talented sophomores and will either start or get significant playing time then it is a very smart move. Back when Steele was actually good Jinks would always have at least that many sophomores on varsity and every one of them either started or played a lot on special teams and when giving starters rests and in 'cleanup time'. He would start a Jr over a senior when both were about equal talent and a sophomore over a Jr in the same circumstance.
