Congrats to LJ on their 2021 State Volleyball Title!! Thanks, in all honesty this was a lunch box Lovejoy team. We had two stud setters that could hit and a lot of good (by Lovejoy Standards) vs great (by Lovejoy standards) girls. I was pleasantly surprised they got it done. When it comes to volleyball we are spoiled. I've seen lower level college teams that Lovejoy would smoke. I dated a volleyball player from Arizona and another from Central Missouri and LJ would handle CM with ease. LJ puts as much into the girls sports as they do the boys and it's great to watch.

SAN ANTONIO — Ava Harris hoped for a historic season ending for La Vernia.
And it nearly happened. But Bellville turned away the Bears 21-25, 26-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-11 in Saturday’s afternoon Region IV-4A championship at Littleton Gym. That denied their quest for their first UIL state tournament berth.
“I think it’s amazing that we made it this far, and it would have been amazing if we could have made history for our school,” said Harris, a senior setter. “But we went further than we have the past two years. Our volleyball team in general is so good, and it’s growing.”
Bellville (39-10) was led by 18 kills from sophomore Marin Higginbotham and 14 from senior Kendall Stark. Bellville secured its third straight regional crown.
The Bears (39-10) were led by senior outside hitter Bailey Schievelbein’s 14 kills. Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Blount had nine kills.
Harris and Schievelbein wrapped up their third years as starters. They endured the rough 2020 pandemic seasons and thrived into senior leaders under first-year coach Danielle Coleman, who was previously an assistant at New Braunfels Canyon.
La Vernia volleyball’s hope for state berth falls short The Bears bowed out in the third round the last two years before coming one set short of a state berth in 2022.
“From going to wearing masks to not wearing masks, I think we did a pretty good job of showing all our shots we practiced,” Schievelbein said. “It’s really great to know that we made it to the regional tournament finals.”
La Vernia defeated Floresville in four sets on Friday to advance to the regional final.
On Saturday, the Bears rode a 10-1 run to win the first set.
La Vernia fought off one set point before Bellville secured the second with kills from Hope Luedecker and Higginbotham.
Bellville finished the third set with an 8-2 run capped by a kill from Higginbotham.
La Vernia was nearing elimination in the fourth set, trailing 18-15. The Bears got back in it with two kills from Madison Whatley and three from Ryleigh Read that sparked an 8-3 run. Schievelbein secured the set with a tip-kill.
Bellville took over the fifth with a late surge after it led 9-8. McKay had back-to-back kills for a 12-8 lead before Higginbotham sent Belville to state with a kill.
Harris and Schievelbein were part of a senior class of six. Harris said the team got along well, and that’s something she’ll always remember.
“It’s a feeling that comes from your heart — being there for each other and supporting each other,” Harris said. “We have so many underclassmen, and you are supposed to pick on them, but none of us did. We were a full team. We loved each other and we pretty much did anything for anyone on our team.”
Meanwhile, D’Hanis defeated Neches 25-21, 25-20, 25-25 to win the Region IV-1A championship in Brenham. The Cowgirls (29-13) qualified for the UIL state tournament for the fourth time in six years. D’Hanis will play in a Class 1A state semifinal on Wednesday at Garland’s Culwell Center. State pairing will be revealed on Sunday.
