Flour Bluff Youth Football League is taking the risk out of tackling
The Corpus Christi Professional Rugby Club is giving a clinic to the Flour Bluff Youth Football League.
The rugby players are instructing the youth on safer ways to tackle to avoid concussions and head injuries.
This new way of tackling is being termed "Hawk Tackling", introduced by Seattle Seahawk Coach Pete Carroll as a prevention against concussions.
Carroll, got the idea from rugby; where the tackler leads with the shoulder instead of the head.
This is why the flour bluff youth football league contacted the rugby club to demonstrate to the kids.
"It makes it simple and the way these guys describe it its almost flawless they know exactly what they are doing and they get it across to our younger players very well," said Lance Howard, from the Flour Bluff Youth Football League.
Mike Lane, the Captain of the Corpus Christi Rugby Club explained to the kids, "we have a phrase called cheek to cheek. Cheek to cheek. Check to butt cheek...Whenever we have an attacker coming at us we put our head, check to check and then we drive sideways."
The kids are picking it up very well and understand the concept.
Nine year old Matthew Howard said, "the main part is not hurting the other person and not hurting yourself its kind of like a wrestling move."
The "Hawk Tackle" is being used by other NFL teams, as well as college, high school and youth teams.
Coaches hope this method of tackling will keep the game fun and safe.
