Many coaches have hit milestones this year.
L.D. Bell's Vickie Griffin won her 800th game earlier this season, Granbury's Tammy Clark won her 300th this month and Saginaw Boswell's Kevin Anderson won his 100th with the Pioneers a few weeks ago.
Add Aledo's Kathy Goings to that list after the 20-year coach won for the 600th time in a win at Cleburne on Oct. 13.
Returning home for a game Oct. 20, assistant coaches, family and former players surprised Goings with a celebration and plaque, commemorating her achievement.
“It was very cool, it was like at least one player from every team I had came back. Seeing them with their own kids now, it was pretty cool,” she said.
Aledo, the No. 9 team in the state, has won 15-straight games and own a 37-9 record, 13-0 in 8-5A, already clinching the district title.
“Honestly, going into coaching when I was young, I never really thought about how many wins I'd reach,” Goings said. “Once I started to hit 200 and on, parents would bring it up.”
“I feel very blessed that all of my wins have been with Aledo – kids train to win, set goals every year, they have the mentality to try to beat the team before them,” she added.
With the 2015 district title, the Bearcats have won 16 titles in Goings' 20 years, 12 outright, and eight times have been undefeated in district.
Aledo has gone to the state tournament three times in her tenure, and have reached the regional tournament in all but three years under Goings.
Goings has a daughter, Maddie, who is a junior and leads the team with 362 kills. Maddie was named to the second team Star Telegram super team last season.
Win No. 300 for Goings came in 2007 in a district game with Mineral Wells. Older daughter Jordan, was on that team.
Asked if 1,000 wins is in her sights, Goings replied, “My bigger goal is a state championship, which is every coach's dream. It's something to work for.”
Aledo has one game left on its slate, at Burleson Centennial on Tuesday. Its bi-district opponent isn't a lock yet with Fort Worth Trimble Tech and Fort Worth South Hills tied at 9-4 in 7-5A. Fort Worth Western Hills sits in second at 10-3.
