If you’re planning ahead for the high school football season, Mansfield’s Newsom Stadium isn’t a bad place to start.
Euless Trinity will play West Coast powerhouse Concord De La Salle Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. at Newsom, a season opener that will follow Arlington Martin and DeSoto’s 4 p.m. kickoff, Hurst-Euless-Bedford athletic director Mike Fielder said Wednesday.
De La Salle, a California program that at one point won 151 straight games, has been scheduled to travel to Texas since February for a matchup with the Trojans, who will be led by first-year head coach Chris Jensen. Newsom, which opened in 2006 and seats more than 11,000, was an ideal fit, especially with Martin and DeSoto playing there the same day, Fielder said.
“It was really just a matter of finding a place that could accommodate a doubleheader, and a place that would be relatively fair for the three of us that are here [in Dallas-Fort Worth],” Fielder said. “[De La Salle] was indifferent, since they’ll be flying into Love Field.”
The only other detail remaining is whether or not Trinity’s game will be televised. Fielder said the two schools are currently working with a marketing group to arrange a
broadcast.
“It’s definitely being explored,” Fielder said.
Locally, the doubleheader will feature three teams that were Class 6A Division I contenders last year.
DeSoto, a team that has frequented national rankings in recent years, lost to eventual state champion Allen in the second round of the playoffs. Martin and Trinity also were eliminated by Allen in consecutive weeks during the postseason.
Then there’s De La Salle, a private school that went from 1992 to 2004 without losing a game. The program won five USA Today national titles during that span. It also
went 14-0 last year, winning the California Open Division state title and finishing third in the USA Today national poll.
De La Salle was featured in last year’s movie, “When the Game Stands Tall,” and it produced NFL players Maurice Jones-Drew and Amani Toomer, among others.
Trinity, which won three state championships under recently-retired coach Steve Lineweaver, is used to high-profile out-of-state matchups. The Trojans hosted Maryland’s Eastern Christian Academy last year and traveled to Bentonville (Ark.) in 2013, winning both games.
In 2012, Trinity opned its season at Bellevue, Wash., losing 31-24. And in 2009, the year of the Trojans’ last state title, they opened AT&T Stadium with a 42-21 win over Bingham, Utah.
