Hello to my Aledo fan-base friends and to other TX HS Football fans,
I was thinking the other day about just how impressive it was that Aledo won the SC again. When you think about it, there aren't many coaches that could take over a team as head coach, which lost all but one starter on Defense and be able to groom them into the type of team that could with-stand the likes of CP, JT, Temple, etc. which they did all season (minus the CA game).
Just curious, do you think that Steve Wood being the Defensive Coordinator played into him being able to build that side of the ball so quickly? Do you think it would have been harder if he took over the reigns and the offense side of the ball was that depleted? Last question just to get some off-season banter going for my Aledo faithful, If Tim Buchanan hadn't retired and he didn't have Steve Wood, do you think Tim would have been able to accomplish the same thing Steve Wood did?
Just thinking about last season, and how it unfolded. IMO, it played right into Steve Wood's strengths! You all had a very good offensive nucleolus returning which gave him some time in which to build the defensive side of the ball and tweak it into the State Championship team you all were!
In fact to be as far along as you all were in game one was impressive indeed! You held CP out of the end-zone on three occasions within the 10 yd line in the first half allowing CP to only score two field goals. CP was denied another time altogether!
a 'Tip of the cap' once again to Steve Wood and to the Aledo program!

Without a doubt I think Coach Wood was the most qualified person to take over for Coach Buck. If it aint broke don't fix it. I'm sure Coach Wood added his own touch to certain things but I would bet that a lot of things did not change significantly. Having one of the best coaching staffs in TX, having a fundamentally sound offensive and defensive scheme, and having the talent to execute the gameplan all contributed to the success for Coach Wood and Aledo.

Aledo football and Texas highschool football have came a long way in the last 60-70 years. When I was in highschool the Mighty Mites from Masonic Home were our enemy. They were good and when I was a senior we finally beat them 8-0 with a late score. We were the better team that year but barely beat the Mighty Mites. In 1958 and in 1959 they had an awesome team for Class B as in 59 they beat several schools bigger than they were and smoked Aledo 58-20. Aledo has always had some good players at running back starting with the Hernandez boys and in 59 a great runner in Donnie Bob Golden . And over the years they kept coming . The greatest until Johnathn Gray in my opinion was Darrel Lowe in the early 70's. An awesome runner and also a great linebacker for the Bearcats. In the 1974 state title game he had a great game and Aledo owned all the stats but lost the game 19-18 when they went for two following the last score. In the early 80's a running back by the name of Dingo Dillard stood out but his senior year he quit football and said he was tired of playing and stayed quit. My senior year 1960 there was a team up in the Panhandle that caught folks attention ,kDenver City with the Gravitt boys .Bert scored 50 TD's that year and I always said that was the greatest team ever . They beat Ernie Koy and Bellville for the title in 2a that year 26-20. Koy went on to star for the Texas Longhorns .

Bearcat Soldier on the Mend... Former Bearcat Storm Aguilar Addresses Bearcat Football Team By Steve Keck- Aledo Sports Daily Aledo football coaches Robbie Jones and Coach Buchanan brought former Bearcat linebacker Storm Augilar to talk to the entire Bearcat football team on Monday’s morning session of two-a-days. Aguilar played middle linebacker for the Bearcats and graduated in the spring of 2009. He just missed the first Bearcat State Championship team in the fall of 2009. By all accounts, Storm Aguilar defied certain death on the battle field in Afghanistan. On December 13, 2012, the truck Augilar was driving was hit by a 500 pound VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device). The device is very similar to the car bombs we see in the Middle East. The impact threw Aguilar over 50 meters out of his truck and left him severely wounded. His fibula and tibia were both shattered and his foot was literally hanging on by a thread. It took a long surgery and he needed 27 pins to reattach all his tendons back to the bone. When he was addressing the team, Aguilar said if the injury had happened three yrays ago, he would have lost his leg. He stated the advances in medicine and technology on this type of injury have made a full recovery possible. Storm told the team about how his life as a Bearcat football player helped prepare him mentally and physically to overcome his injury and prepare him for battle as a soldier. “In football and in the service, the principles honor, integrity, and trusting each other help get you through tough times,” said Aguilar. “It would be easy to quit but our experience helps us get through it”. In combat and football Aguilar said, “You have to practice like you play to become a champion. To be successful at both you have to push yourself a little harder. You have to push through a few more push-ups or run that last gasser a little harder.” Aguilar said he misses football even after being away from the game for the last few years. He used one last comparison between football and fighting the enemy. “They are both a controlled aggression. “You can go out and hit somebody and get away with it”, said Aguilar. Aguilar said he feels lucky to be alive and wants to work hard on his rehabilitation so he can serve his country with another tour of duty in Afghanistan. He feels like he has some unfinished business over there. aledosportsdaily.com/

IMO it's athletes like this that will keep Aledo at or near the top for the foreseeable future. No Offence to the coaches., Past and present, as their input is greatly needed. But even the greatest Coaches cannot stay at the top without talent. And Aledo has more than most.

We have a couple of track stars that play football that do not like contact, so their speed really isn't a factor since they don't see the field much. Now the young man in the video is already running times in the 100 that would have placed him in many varsity meets. If i'm his dad, I might tell him to forget about that silly foosball, its for the devil - and get real serious about track!

WOW Are we sure that kid didn't spend an extra year or two in a grade!

Playoff nuggets:
- Aledo has played 96 different schools (111-27-1) - WF Rider is the program that Aledo has the most playoff appearances against (6)
- Aledo has not played a school in the playoffs that starts with the letter: I, O, Q, U, X, Y, or Z
- Aledo has played 63 schools only once in the playoffs (48-15)
- Aledo has played 13 schools starting with the letter C (Clarendon, China Springs, Clifton, Commerce, Cuero, Copperas Cove, Canyon Randall, Corsicana, Cleburne, Canyon, Calallen, College Station, Crosby)
- Aledo has a losing playoff record against 17 schools (Allen, Bowie, Clarendon, Commerce, College Station, Copperas Cove, Decatur, Denton Ryan, Dallas Lincoln, Denton Guyer, Friona, Hawkins, Mansfield Lake Ridge, Ranger, Sonora, Southlake Carroll, Wall) - 6 schools have beat Aledo in the playoffs and eventually won state (Sonora, Grapeland, Liberty-Eylau, Denton Ryan, Denton Guyer, College Station)
- 7 schools have beat Aledo in the playoffs and lost in the state game (Clarendon, Commerce, Abilene Wylie, Denton Ryan, Dallas Lincoln, Copperas Cove x2, Mansfield Lake Ridge)
- Denton Ryan and Copperas Cove are the only programs who have won against Aledo more than once in the playoffs (0-2 against both)
- 13 of the 27 playoff losses (48%) have come to an eventual state finalist or state champion

Covid 19 got us.
The consecutive 14+ win steak is over. Aledo went 13-1 last year and our streak of 4 seasons in a row has ended. We were in great company.
6 Allen 2012-2017 *5 Denton Ryan 2016-2020 5 Southlake Carroll 2002-2006 5 Lake Travis 2007-2011 4 Aledo 2016-2019
9 other schools have 4 also.

Mansfield’s epic loss in the State game was largely attributed to Aledo’s powerful ground and pound defense. Mansfields star QB Jett Duffy and RB Duke Carter we’re so badly beaten in the Aledo game, neither player was able to contribute much to the embarrassing 56-0 stomping George Ranch put on them.
