From what I saw last night, Calallen's defense held King's offense in check for the most part. I was surprised to see their QB get up after a pretty vicious blindside hit while in the pocket. King did get off one long, not-very-well-defended pass for their only TD. Other than that one play, Calallen defense was first-scrimmage-of-the-season stout. Offensively, Calallen moved the ball fairly well against a suspect King defense. By my count, Calallen scored 4 TDs while I was there and King scored 1. I don't know how much more they played after I left, but personally I graded Calallen's overall performance as "good" on defense and "acceptable" on offense although by not really knowing how good King is, it's hard to tell for sure. That's a good take. At this point and probably on opening night, it will probably still be safe to say the defense is ahead of the offense. But unlike last year, the gap is not as wide. Having some returning signal callers back is plus which we didn't have last year. Same with the Wr corp with some additions to both the WR corp and the backfield. The new offensive scheme looks promising. Like you, not sure if it was because of the King? But if we can come out and execute just the same against Rockport, it's indeed possible we might have made progress on that side of the ball. The game that will tell me that we are doing it right will be the Weslaco East game. No matter if its non district or playoffs, it's a challenge. They will be loud and proud and some home cooking from the Stripes is always a factor. We go down there and dominate, then I will feel comfortable that we are on the right track and Katie the barn door.

I really don't put much into scrimmages, but it seems y'all shut down a good King offense. Color me wrong, but when Calallen has a down year, they have always came back the next year with a vengeance. Just looking at the pic of those kids, you can tell they have some pretty good athletes. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Wildcats of Calallen playing, and possibly win the region 4-A title.

And they played a good deal even against our second team even tough we were platooning a good deal with 1st and 2nd teamers later in the scrimmage. Same with our offense, but like CFWB noted , I m not sure about King's Defense, so it is still hard to measure where we are. I looked at the intangibles on offense such as the WR's blocking down field which allowed others to get extra yards and a few lying themselves out to catch passes. That was so hit and miss last year it was kind representative of the unit as whole. The line was firing off the line pretty good as well, but had their issues with penalties. But for a young unit, they looked good.

I would much rather have a few false starts early on, than having an O-line that is just happy to be there. The coaches, and more practice time will correct those miscues.

Not so sure the the Refs are not nervous either. After the scrimmage, I walked by a couple of them on the way out of the stadium and they looked young like maybe this is their first rodeo at this level. But then again it might be me getting older which makes that judgement skewed. But yea, off sides, holds, etc are part of the puzzle this time of the year, especially when trying to implement some new schemes and people into the offense. All correctable if the boys allow themselves to be taught. This group is much better in tune with getting it right from the get go.

King's QB didn't have a great throwing motion last year. Looked like he was pushing the ball. Maybe they worked with him on that? He seems to do better with his feet. I saw where King went to the Spread. Stiffy, do you think FB will have a problem with them?

Cal won the controlled portion 3-1. The game situation (2qtrs) 21-0. I think we are on the right track! Good to hear that C5 is back on track with an Offense. Expected the D to be a very strong unit this year. ^^^^^^^This^^^^^^ If Cal gets the offense rolling, they could be very, very good this year with the talent they have coming back on the D.

Might as well start a new thread for Cochino and the PLC fans to hi-jack..... I didn't even make a comment on the Alice/VE thread. I did read the whole thing, though...made me sick to my stomach.

Kings offense is missing a big part of it this year. Probably a slow start on the O for king.

The thing I liked most was hearing about an attitude shift by the boys this summer. It seems the lackadaisical, going-thru-the-motions approach is gone now and has been replaced with the hard work and a sense of urgency amongst the team that we Cat fans had grown accustomed to over the years. Hopefully the dividends of this will be apparent like it used to be.

It helps when a good number of these kids on the varsity and coming up through the program are second generation Cats whose Dad's or someone in their families were here during the early building of the program and the milestone accomplishments (winning Region). It's one of those things where you have a name you need to live up to, so don't be a slacker out there. I can think of a few Dad's who have pretty much instilled those values in them without being overbearing. Plus these kids were little guys roaming around the stands when the Cats had some great teams and some of them even back then were very attentive of those events when they occurred and the significance. This years Sophs were 1st graders when we played in the State Title game in Round Rock in 2005. The JV team they are now part of, save three or four who might be on the varsity roster this fall, since 7th grade have lost maybe 5 games in total. It might less than that??? It probably is.

I just found out an old Cal great running back is the head coach of Cameron yoe... Jeff Walker... I remember watching him play when I was in junior high and later elementary.. Danaher even told us a story when I was a freshman about walker in boot camp when he drug 3 guys into the endzone to score and said it was cause of boot camp that he was able to do it...

Great honor to pass up Gordon Woods record! Its only going to take 8 wins this season, well deserved! If we go undefeated, it would be the Victoria West game @ their house. One week after you ladies visit Real Wildcat Land. It would have been very historic to win it against GP.
