From the Caller Times:
KINGSVILLE — It became very clear — very fast — that Edcouch-Elsa was going to have to shoot lights-out if it had plans to knock off Flour Bluff.
The Yellowjackets, like many other teams, were at a physical disadvantage against the Hornets’ interior — 6-foot-8 forwards Cody Brewer and Tyler Barlow in particular — when the two met for a Region IV-4A bi-district boys basketball matchup at Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Steinke Center on Tuesday.
Edcouch-Elsa, after burying itself with a cold streak in the opening quarter, just couldn’t make enough shots to prevent Flour Bluff from racing out to a 53-39 win.
The Hornets (20-12) advance to play San Antonio Harlandale in the area round.
“Our advantage, height-wise, is going to hurt a lot of teams,” Flour Bluff coach Robert Dodd said. “They knew that they had to shoot the 3-ball and they did. They stayed close for a while, but I think we just kind of wore on them. We started to rebound a bit better in the second half and they started getting a little winded.”
Brewer and Barlow totaled just 10 points in the first half before exploding for 22 in the second half.
The duo combined for 12 rebounds and four blocks, but has Nick Jones to thank for opening up the paint over in the second half.
Jones made two of his three 3-pointers in the first quarter, drawing a lot of attention toward the perimeter as the first half progressed.
“It helps greatly,” Brewer said of the outside shooting, “because it made Edcouch go out there on them, leaving us basically one-on-one with their guys down low.”
Edcouch-Elsa (20-13) scored on its second possession of the game — an Arturo Ybarra 3-pointer — before succumbing to a 15-0 Flour Bluff run to end the first eight minutes.
From that point on, the closest the Yellowjackets got to tying the game was five points, a deficit that didn’t show until the 4:45 mark in the third and again with 7:19 to play in the fourth.
Shots were finally going down for Edcouch-Elsa, but Barlow said that had a lot to do with a mental breakdown for Flour Bluff down the stretch.
A late timeout called by Dodd eventually got that matter fixed.
“That was also partially our fault,” Barlow said. “We kind of collapsed on defense. We didn’t know who had who, but during that timeout, we figured everything out.”
Brewer scored six of his 15 points in the third, while eight of Barlow’s game-high 17 occurred in the fourth.
Brewer and Barlow mostly settled for hook shots and midrange jumpers, citing the Yellowjackets’ speed to the point of attack.
Brewer compared Edcouch-Elsa’s makeup to Ray and Laredo Nixon’s, saying that Flour Bluff’s experience against those two teams helped persevere through Tuesday’s tilt.
“They’re just really, really quick,” Brewer said. “A lot of times they beat us to where we were going.”
Although Dodd and the Hornets are thrilled to extend their season, they all know they didn’t put together their best performance against the Yellowjackets.
“We’ve got to do a better job of playing 32 minutes,” Dodd said. “I told the kids, even before the game, to beat Edcouch, I don’t think we have to play a perfect game. But we’ve got to play good and we’ve got to play good for 32 minutes.”
