CORPUS CHRISTI — First-year Moody coach Mike Cantu has often said that the Trojans' best defense this season is a productive, time-consuming offense.
Not even Moody's offense could lend a hand Thursday night against Laredo Martin.
Already depleted with defensive injuries, the Trojans surrendered 350 yards rushing in the first half alone on some huge Martin plays, and the Tigers sailed to a 62-27 victory in District 31-4A play at Buc Stadium.
Behind 736 yards of offense — all rushing — Martin (3-6 overall, 2-3 district) kept its postseason hopes alive, but the Trojans (1-7, 1-4) likely won't be playing football past the second week of November.
"The playoffs are null and void, I guess you would say," Cantu said. "But we've got two more games. If our kids want to show good character they're going to show up and play hard and finish out strong."
Strong would be an apt description of the Tigers' ground game. Rudy Castillo ran for 458 yards and five touchdowns, teammate Alexis Navarro added 177 yards and two long scoring runs on just eight carries and quarterback Albert Estrada added 82 yards and a touchdown.
"I have no idea," Tigers coach David Charles said, asked about Martin's single-game record for rushing yards, "but I'm pretty sure Rudy's pretty darn close to it."
A lot closer than Moody's defenders got to Castillo. On the night, he had only one carry out of 28 attempts for negative yards. Most of his yards came on the same slant play, from which he scored on runs of 54, 12, 35, and 72 yards.
"That's what's so frustrating. We'll go back and watch it on film. But that's frustrating," Cantu said. "Like I said, we've got to get back to the drawing board and work on some things. At the end of the day it's something that we're trying to work on.
"Our kids are fighting. It's hard to blame anyone. Just blame me. I've done a poor job of getting them ready," Cantu said. "I lose games, I don't win them. I lose them, so put it all on me. I did a poor job of getting them ready for the game and we just need to get better every day and keep working on it."
The other Castillo score came up the middle after Michael Cantu's 2-yard TD sneak pulled the Trojans into a two-possession game at 41-27 with 10 minutes, 23 seconds remaining.
The Tigers then scored on their next two possessions on Castillo's 6-yard run and Navarro's 62-yarder to pull away.
"Corpus Christi Moody, they showed a lot of positive things on film going into this game. We were just hoping to try and catch them on a bad night and have a good night," Charles said. "Our whole offense all year long has gone as far as Rudy has taken us and Rudy came ready to play tonight. He ran hard and he was helped out by our quarterback Albert and he was helped out by Alexis. Once we get those three guys going we're a pretty hard team to stop."
Michael Cantu finished with 290 passing yards and TD passes to Chris Jones, Robert Diggs and Isaiah Patterson, and added the TD on the sneak.
The Trojans still were within striking distance on Cantu's nifty 29-yard swing pass to Jones for a TD with 6:19 remaining in the first half. But Martin struck on successive drives after that on Navarro's 60-yard TD run — that also came on a slant play through a gaping hole on the left side — and he followed that with the exact same scoring play three minutes late to stake the Tigers to a 28-6 lead.
Moody closed within 28-13 on Cantu's 6-yard TD connection with Diggs — it was the latter's fifth TD reception in two games — but the momentum clearly was resting in Martin's locker room at the break.
