But about two weeks ago, I had almost 4 inches of rain over three days here in Calallen. Greened up the small area that got it pretty good. But Robstown just a few miles south only got 1/2 inch. Haven’t turned on Sprinklers in two weeks, but will have to do so probably next week. It soaked in fast and the grass is starting to show some heat stress again.

It's dry as a popcorn fart. That really sucks. Not good for early summer that is for sure. Pretty darn dry. But about two weeks ago, I had almost 4 inches of rain over three days here in Calallen. Yes, I'd heard there were some good rains there a couple weeks back but were pretty isolated. hell, we got 1.2" between late Saturday night 05/28 and Tuesday 05/31 and by that Friday we were burning up. Simply not enough to get into the ground for some bottom moisture and the heat combined with God awful wind dried it out bad in 2 days. Even in the coastal fields that have good root systems it is laid over and burnt. I'm wondering what this heat is doing to the Gulf this early. Makes me concerned we may see a couple of real doozies brew up early in the season this year.

Most of what moisture we get will come from late season frontal boundaries like this last rain event from the west and north. This is the way it was during the last bad drought cycle in 2010-2011. I think it was in July 2011, a small depression developed right off the coast of the King Ranch down in Kleberg County and reached minimum tropical storm status and everyone was excited because we might get a few inches of rain. But the air was so darn dry in part thanks to the lack of ground moisture, the storm dissipated as it moved inland. All the TV Mets and others in the Met field were in awe because those things only occur in the Arabian peninsula and sometimes down in Australia when they inch closer to desert regions. I don't think a weather station got .01 inch of rain down there? Part of me would like this weather pattern continue another few months to get us passed the hurricane season. Insurance rates have been insane down here for years and are even more insane right now and choices are getting more limited. I've had clients receive 50% increases on their premiums this year. All the severe weather, etc around the nation and primarily in Texas and Louisiana is being baked into this along with the inflationary cost of materials for repairs and reconstruction assuming worse case scenarios too. I would hate to see what the cost of lumber, roofing materials, etc would be if one of our major metro areas anywhere on the US coast got whacked by a major hurricane. Oh, and if one threatened the refineries and oil terminals and actually shut them down from Corpus to New Orleans even for a short period of time, that $5.00 Diesel right now might look like a bargain...... nationwide.

I agree with all this. I would hate to see a major storm come through any largely populated area or any refineries either. What we need simply are multiple tropical waves and even smaller storms this year like we used to get when I was a kid. I can remember we would always get multiple large rains in late July and through September due mostly to tropical systems moving inland between Brownsville and CC. Even a a kid it seemed we always got much more rainfall from tropical systems and storms than we did from any hurricane that came ashore. I have no idea why but maybe because they tend to move slower inland. I'm just hoping this awful high pressure system moves NE next week like they are predicting. For the love of God it was 107 at the house yesterday with a 4 mph wind and the heat index was 112. Horrible for early June. My buddy said it hit 112 in Dilley yesterday. RIDICULOUS

RIDICULOUS It's just a cycle. Last couple of summers have been fairly wet and mild temp wise. I don't think we hit 100 last year until maybe late July and after that only had a handful of days where it did during the time of the year we usually hit 100 or above daily or close to it.

Yes, no doubt it is cycles but the trend has been hotter and drier for more years than not the past 10 years. Last year was by far the best year we've had for rainfall since 2007. SA avg is about 31" per year. Us being a little further east it is closer to 32". Last year we got 46.55" at my place. The last year we had 32" or over prior that was 2015 and 6 of the last 10 we've been under 30" with 3 of those being under 25". That doesn't sound horrible I agree but the rains were NOT timely and usually came with long dry spells in between not allowing grass, crops, or anything else to benefit like they should. Example: 2020 we went over 100 days (late May thru Early Sept) and got only 2.85". I made one cutting of hay from my coastal that year and it was in very late November.

I've seen pics of friends on FB and heard first hand reports who have gone up to the Frio and the Guadalupe above Canyon Lake and yikes...... Seems like daily I see one of the resorts on the Frio posting a cancellation for one of their rentals. I wonder if some of this is due to gas prices or if its the fact their ain't much water to float of even sit in on the river by some of these places? Fortunately the place we always stay at above Rio Frio has an old irrigation diversion damn right in front of it which makes a nice little lake even when drier than normal. But I haven't seen it when it's been this dry . They are further upstream to compared to Garner and Concan and get the benefit of many of the springs being closer by which feed the river. I'm going up to Austin (Cedar Park) for the next three days, I'm going to take the back roads thru Wimberley and then down to New Braunfels on the way back south on Saturday . I'm curious to see what the Blanco and Guadalupe looks like.

Drove over the Guadalupe in Gruene yesterday and was surprised that Rockin' R didn't have very many cars parked there at all and very few were coming down the river when I looked up river. It is very slow and floating it now will require a scratched up arse unless you have a bottom in the tube and a heck of a lot of getting out and walking in the shallows. PM me and I'll shoot you my number and if you are in NB and have time I will meet up with you and buy you lunch if it is that time or a cold one if after 4pm! I typically leave the office around 4 to get home and feed and check the cows but can always make an exception for a cold brew. It is time for you to try Guadalupe brewing company anyways!!!! ROFLMAO
