back in the day we lived with staph, that chit was afraid of us......... Ya know, I think thats partially true. Seems like there are a lot more staph infections now than there used to be. Maybe the bugs are getting stronger? Antibiotic resistant? Heck I used to cut or scrape myself all the time, never use bandaids or any ointments, just washed it off with soap and water and went about my bidness. Heck yeah. If I told anyone I got iodine put on it. Hurt worse than the cut or scrape in the first place. Mom and Dad went by the fever making the doctor or not decision.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed it from the "generally recognized as safe" and into the "untested" classification to effectively halt its distribution in the United States in 1998 over fears of potential mercury poisoning. It is readily available in most other countries." You can still by Iodine (Tincture) and even use Iodine tablets to purify water, but you can't buy Mercurochrome in the USA anymore.

From Wikipedia:
Merbromin From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Monkey Blood)
Merbromin (marketed as Mercurochrome, Merbromine, Sodium mercurescein, Asceptichrome, Supercrome, Brocasept and Cinfacromin) is a topical antiseptic used for minor cuts and scrapes.
They consider Mercurochrome as "Monkey Blood" and not Iodine?

I think it caused more infections because kids would not show their parents their cuts anymore after their first experience with that crap!

I wonder if they still sell it in Mexico? Might have someone pick up a few bottles if so when they go across for other pharmaceuticals.

Used lots of Monkey blood when I was a kid. And it stung! There was another redish colored medicine we used, it did not sting as much, and I dont think it worked as well. Can't remember the name of it.
We also has some stuff calle Blu-cote or something like that that we used on our horses when they got nicks or cuts. Only problem with it was it was bright purple in color, so it showed up even worse than monkey blood, but I doctored many a cut with it. I wonder if they still sell it or if the lawyers got ahold of it too???

Keep fluids from nose and mouth away from open wounds. One of those stories on the news involved a girl who had a laceration in her leg and staph from a throat infection was accidentally passed on to her via the wound. Man it wrecked her body. One comment from an OLD man----? I really believe that young kids are raised too clean. They seldom get in the dirt and get dirty. Mom's wash them so much they never build up any immunity?? Yes I was a dirty farm kid. Seldom went to a Dr unless It was very serious. Lot's of tales there. LOL!

That's certainly true, as well, so not only are the bugs developing resistance to antibiotics, our immune systems are weakening because they don't get any "practice." The human immune system is a remarkable machine that can kill probably 90% or more of harmful microbes when it's in good working order. I say all kids should go swim in a ditch or a least a muddy lake on occasion! And scrap all of that anti-bacteria soap...that stuff isn't as good for you as you think.
