Heard Laredo United took out Sharyland tonight. They limped into the playoffs because of using a ineligible player
Story posted on 3adl
season that was flawless thus far has irrevocably been reversed.
The United Longhorns baseball team, previously undefeated in District 29-5A and ranked 10th in Class 5A in the state, have self-reported a player’s ineligibility throughout the season, resulting in the very least, a forfeiture of every game the player participated in.
As it stands, following Tuesday’s 23-1 win against LBJ, United is 1-7 in district and 3-16 overall. The player did not play in two games during the non-district season.
UISD athletic director Bobby Cruz would not comment on the name of the player. The violation was regarding the credit hours the student was enrolled in during this semester.
This is a similar violation to what the Eagle Pass boys’ soccer team went through earlier this school year.
The UIL requires all athletes to enroll in a minimum of four credit hours per school day, and the violation occurred because the United student was an hour short.
“We do want to stress that this was absolutely not an academic ineligibility,” Cruz said. “It was not because of the athlete’s grades, and he did not fail a class or anything like that.”
The issue has been resolved within the player’s schedule and he is now eligible to compete in future contests.
“The affected student is a good kid and a great student,” Cruz said. “He just didn’t need much to graduate and was given a class that didn’t count toward his four required hours; he was one short.
“The coaches fixed the problem once they realized it and he is now eligible.”
United’s coaching staff, led by head coach J.J. Gomez, self-reported the violation on Tuesday, claiming to have mistakenly played an ineligible player throughout the season.
The player did participate in all seven of the District 29-5A wins for the Longhorns, causing those games to become losses. The opposing teams’ losses against United are now converted to wins.
The minimum penalty for playing an ineligible player is a forfeiture of said game, but there could potentially be greater consequences handed down at a later time.
“This was an honest error,” Cruz said. “(United) wanted to be forthcoming once it was discovered, but we as coaches need to constantly be on top of this sort of thing.”
Friday marks the midway point through District 29-5A’s season with the conclusion of the first round. As a result of the recent turn of events, the Longhorns are unable to defend their five consecutive district titles.
With the apparent forfeitures, United dropped down to the very bottom of District 29-5A’s standings.
Following Tuesday’s games, Alexander and C.C. Winn sit atop the district. Each is 7-1 in league play.
Eagle Pass is 6-2, and Martin, Nixon and Cigarroa are each 4-4. South and Del Rio are each 3-5.
United and LBJ are each 1-7.
