This story says that there will not be another division just a renaming of six man to to 1A and everyone changes names to the next division up without changing enrollment numbers. IOW 4A will be 5A but the same schools and same enrollment. Not what I was expecting and not sure this author got it right about that either.

Indeed, it is coming. The interesting thing I read here is they are now stating that it would basically just bump teams that are 4a now to 5a and 5a teams now to 6a and not alter numbers all that much. What I'd read a few months ago was predicting that any schools with about 2600 or more would go 6a and then 5a would be something like 1700-2599 or something like that. There will definately have to be some number adjusments to get some 'equality' in the numbers of schools in each classification I would think. The bottom line is that there will be many more travel burdens put on schools with this move. Don't get me wrong, I am all for it since right now there is a very distinct chance a D2 5a school with 2250 kids could very well be facing another in the title game with well over 5K kids!

Yeah, it looks like the "journalist" didn't have all of the facts. It's a Lubbock article, so what do you expect? What it does look like is that adding the 6A right now will keep most schools in the same classification but will allow for expansion in the future. This, I suppose, will create a transition period for that to happen. I'll try to find some more info.

I know at the state championship games year before this last the UIL Honcho was saying on the broadcast that they wanted to go 6A for a couple of times before but certainly would the next one coming up regardless. Well, we will see but for sure that is what they want and were planning for at that time. I figure that is what the changes to 30 and 31 4A were about this time in already grouping like enrollment schools together. Alice is the odd man out on that however.
