I just saw this on the Tivy HS Football FB page from a players dad.
Thanks for pouring your life into the students of Tivy High School for the past 10 years. As a parent of one Cheerleader and two football players during the "Mark Smith Era", the memories are abundant and my kids and I will never forget them. There have been so many things that have impressed me about your program, I wanted to thank you specifically for some of them at this sad occasion of your departure. I'm sure I can't begin to express what you have meant in the lives of so many young people and there families, but here goes, in no particular order:
Thanks for tapping into the dreams and imagination of young men who are not always motivated by books, classrooms, and homework.
Thanks for turning kids that may be "too small", "too slow", "too fat", "too dumb", or "too whatever" into champions.
Thanks for teaching them being successful takes hard work, commitment, and discipline.
Thanks for understanding that the real goal is to make good husbands, good fathers, and good men and not just good football players.
Thanks for teaching and enforcing consequences, even when it's inconvenient or hurts the team.
Thanks for putting "family time" and "go to church" on the football calendar.
Thanks for doing during the season what you say you are going to do at the parents meeting.
Thanks for videotaping a special 17th birthday message about character and manhood for my son.
Thanks for letting the senior dads in the locker room before their last home game.
Thanks for putting up with parents (mostly dads) who think they know more about coaching football than you do.
Thanks for letting a girl on the team if she is better at her position than any of the boys you have.
Thanks for the economic impact to the Kerrville Independent School District and CIty of Kerrville which occurs when we pack the stadium and are recognized across the state for our consistently top caliber football program (yes there are people who would have never heard of Kerrville except by our football team in the news).
Thanks for giving the community something to be excited about and look forward to when the economy stinks and the world seems to be going crazy.
Thanks for having open practices so all of the "has beens" or "never was" dads (like me) can watch our sons and re-live our high school dreams vicariously through them.
Thanks for writing the boys individual notes of encouragement.
Thanks for being a godly man and re-enforcing character traits and values that we, as parents, have tried to instill in our kids.
Thanks for sacrificing so much time away from your family working on making this program successful.
Thanks for teaching leadership by example.
Thanks for praying with the team, as well as praying with their opponents.
Thanks for believing each year that each team will win state (and thanks for putting together the playoff manual to help them believe and get there step by step).
Thanks for jumping up and down on the sideline during a game when something really great happens.
Thanks for being that "big man with a mustache" that every player on the team respects.
Thanks for scheduling ridiculously strong teams for them to compete with in order to rise to that level.
Thanks for fulfilling a dream by letting two brothers, one freshman and one senior, dress out and take the field together as teammates.
Mark, you have my boys' love and my respect. God bless you and your family and may He continue to use you to touch the lives of teenagers.
