This Round 2 Area contest will kick at 7:30 pm at Marion's Veterans Stadium on Friday November 17th. Both teams look like are playing their best football of the season right now.

The Tigers had 2 early-season losses in Pre-District before they got their young players put into place....and their QB Rosenquest. He's a senior and the obvious best choice on the team....so maybe he was injured early season. The losses were to undefeated Jourdanton and undefeated Tidehaven. Rosenquest did not play QB in these games from what I saw on the clips. The Tigers have a very good defense and now their offense has had enough time to become very high-scoring. They have plenty of different playmakers that can score on the ground and thru the air.

The Owls look very formidable to me this season also....their only loss was to undefeated Jourdanton. From the clips I've seen of this team....their dual-threat very athletic junior QB DJ Richter accounts for 938 of their 1968 yds rushing this season, and over 1700 yds in the passing game. He appears to be very quick w/speed and also fairly accurate throwing the ball. You might say that without him behind center....Hondo loses over half of their offensive capabilities. But obviously when he is back there leading the offense....they have been very good.

Goliad is averaging right at 40 pts/game scored while allowing 12.5 pts/game against their schedule this season. Hondo has averaged right at 37 pts/game while allowing 20 pts/game against their schedule this season. So as you can see....this game looks to be a good battle. Goliad does appear to have the better defense when you look at the season stats for both teams....but it all depends on the matchup and this is a playoff situation between two quality teams.

Goliad happens to be my alma mater so I tend to follow their seasons in football each season. Just so happens I live very close to Marion over in New Braunfels, so I guess this will be the perfect time for me to see them in a very meaningful game this season in the playoffs. My house is probably 20 min. from this stadium....I've never been to this stadium. I looked it up online....it was built in 2016, seats about 3000, and looks to be a very nice stadium w/ artificial turf in a small but growing community close to New Braunfels and San Antonio. The weather is scheduled to be very nice this Friday night. My brother lives in Seguin, so we will be attending this game together. He is Class of 1972 and I am Class of 1973. We both played on the teams back then....and other sports as well. Last season was the 50th anniversary for me, not this season. But what the heck.....GO TIGERS!! OR as they used to say: Grrrr....Eat Em Up Tigers!!

The other team I follow each season is Argyle in Class 5A-D2.....my son's alma mater. He played football and other sports there as well....including Argyle's first trip ever to a State Championship game in only their 3rd season as a school....he was a junior on that team. Obviously they are now perennial winners thru the years and back playing in the playoffs again this season. I think the only season Argyle did not make the playoffs in their 21 seasons was that first season. Anyway....I will give up my Argyle game on the internet Friday night to watch the Tigers in person. I can always come home and watch the Argyle replay online. I hope both teams win Friday night.

Hondo is playing pretty good but I don't think they will beat Goliad. Goliad is playing some ball!
I'll take Goliad by 3 TDs
35-14
And, I added you a poll to this one

Great.....let's get some voters to this poll. My personal observations of both teams playing recent games leads me to believe this will be a very competitive and offensive type game with both teams going down the field back and forth. I think there will be lead changes during the contest and this game could very well come down to the 4th quarter. Unlike Clemensbuff's prediction....I think Hondo is fairly evenly matched up with Goliad in this battle. Turnovers will most likely play a huge role in this game. I foresee the Goliad Coaching Staff putting a "spy linebacker" on QB Richter for when he takes off on keepers or rolls out to pass and keeps it.....he does that alot. But he's also very shifty faking the handoff and then following his back thru the defensive line for big gains just like a running back. He IS their best running back....even though he is the QB. They also have a very speedy wideout that catches passes and takes handoffs on jet sweeps to look out for. And then a big bruiser-type RB up the middle and off tackle on runs.

Goliad runs the ball very effectively with RB Luco, Wideout/RB Perry, and Wideout/RB Franklin. All 3 are very speedy, but Perry and Franklin are speed burners and both are only sophomores. They run different offensive sets from the shotgun to the tight fullhouse backfield and even a pistol occasionally. The line has size so the fullhouse tight formation works well for them. Rosenquest at QB does occasionally run a keeper, but usually only when forced out of the pocket. I would assess his accuracy throwing the ball to be above average with good arm strength....but not excellent or outstanding. Let's face it....this Tigers offense doesn't really need to rely on a passing game to win.

It's amazing to me how many big sophs are starters on the Goliad team this season. They also have a bevy of combinations off the bench they utilize thruout each game to give the players plenty of playing time, and some rest to their primary starters. You will notice lots of substitutions thruout the game on the Goliad side. So I would say that the Tigers are well-positioned off the bench with qualified depth should an injury happen to a starter. This becomes very important in a successful playoff run IF your team is good on both sides of the ball like Goliad is.

The weakness of the Goliad Tigers on defense is the secondary....IMHO. Not that they don't get interceptions and knock down passes, but a very good passing attack gives them problems. They are very stout against the run. They do have speed in the secondary, but I think that position is very difficult and usually younger players are just not as good at covering experienced receivers that know how to get open and go up to get passes like a seasoned senior defensive back would be. So against a really good passing attack(which means good receivers), the Tiger secondary can be beat at times for big plays. I think Hondo will be able to hit some big pass plays on Goliad Friday night.

IF Goliad does shut down the Hondo running game and they end up passing alot and moving those chains....then the Owls will also become susceptible to interceptions. This Goliad team has lots of interceptions this season even though they do give up big plays in the secondary. And you really don't want to give up the football to the Tigers offense....just sayin'.

I'm looking for a final score in this game to hang close to each team's season average with Goliad getting the win. It IS entirely possible that the Tiger defense MIGHT shut down the Owls offensive attack and really limit their scores, but Hondo hasn't won 10 games this season by accident. They have a balanced attack which tends to give opposing defenses difficulty...esp. with their shifty and speedy dual-threat QB. And remember....Richter HAS thrown for over 1700 yds this season. Give me Goliad by a final score of 45-38.

I do see that they have one common opponent between them played 2 weeks apart in Jourdanton.
Both lost
Jourdanton 56 Hondo 25 Jourdanton 41 Goliad 20
It looks like both have played pretty weak schedules but Goliad did play and beat Edna in district and that says something to me. They also held Edna to just 6 points.
Hondo has scored 402 while allowing 216 while Goliad has scored 439 allowing only 139 points. I think Goliad's defense is substantially better than Hondo's defense and they will be the big difference in this game. I'm just having a hard time seeing this game closer than 21 points.

IF somehow the Hondo Owls defense can limit the Tigers offense to less than 30 pts....then they have a very good chance of winning this game. I just don't see Goliad scoring more than 30 pts in this game and coming out the loser. But I could see Goliad scoring less than 30 pts and still coming out the winner because of their defense. This will be a very good game to watch this Friday Night. Get READY TO RUUUUMBLE!!! And GRRR...EAT EM UP TIGERS!!!
