As a former Rattler assistant, I am excited for them with this hire. He can get those kids bought in and the winning will happen again. Bush and Van Nest both had some good teams through 2007, then they fell off the grid drastically. That is the key WC82. Let me tell you that from what I saw there when my kid's freshman team beat the pants off them by 60+ back in the 2012 season that was the biggest issue they had....attitude. Hell man, we had kids switching jerseys in the 2nd half and carrying the ball up the middle trying not to score on them and still did multiple times. At the end we were walking with my boy and some of his buds towards the busses and a bunch of those SM players that had just been whooped like school girls were having a grand ol' time playing grabazz with some girls while we walked by acting as though they'd just won a big game. They certainly seemed to have not problem with being massacred at all and I don't remember their coaches telling them much about it either. My thought at the time, and I said as much to Mrs Clemensbuff and my boy to was that SM was going to be hurting for a long time if that was the general attitude of the team/players. If you were with Bush over there in San Marcos when all the renovations were happening I likely saw you around campus. I was overseeing a bunch of that work at the time and had a couple colorful conversations with coach Bush. He was a good guy and I enjoyed talking football with him those times. I came in shortly after he left. I worked with Van Nest. Van Nest benefitted from Bush for sure. He also had some great assistants at the time in Kilby, Pape, and several others. We went to the region finals when I was there and lost in 5 OTs to SA MacArthur High. Van Nest had tons of talent, but his assistants left and he let the kids worry more about the "player lounge" he built for them, than the games they were playing.

I cannot figure this out. There has to be something more behind this move other than some head butting with the AD of the Denton ISD. Just makes no sense. Bush was able to turn this SM program around 20+ years ago, lets see if he can now. I can tell you this, he will not have the type of athletes he is used to having at Guyer! What I read publicly is he wanted to relocate to that part of the state and who wouldn't if opportunity knocked? San Marcos should be a very attractive job due to location and population shifts from Austin moving that way. One high school town at present which is kind of rare animal in the 6A ranks now a days. I heard different tales behind closed doors. This has been years in the making. He was on the shortlist at some top DFW schools. He was open to moving South, but leaving Denton has been in the writing for a while. I never met him or spoke to him, but when this happened I wasn't shocked based on what I was told.

Well let’s see how he debuts this week - they have New Braunfels on the schedule for the opening week.
I don’t expect an instant transformation this year, but I expect significant progress and a close game against the Unicorns. The Rattlers debut at home on 9/25.

San Marcos actually looked quite solid last night. But Unicorns escaped with a 35-31 win. Rattlers will need to work on their kicking game if they want to contend with a 6A playoff spot. They might content regardless. Hays looks down this year.
