Bishop Amat football stuns defending state champion Aledo, 42-7, in trip to Texas
By John Henry, Correspondent
ALEDO, Texas – Bishop Amat traveled east and accomplished the extraordinary by making one of Texas’ best football programs look ordinary.
For perhaps one night only and without one of its best players, Aledo, the top-ranked Class 5A team in the state, was no match for its opponent.
The Lancers (1-1) stunned the Bearcats (1-1) with 28 unanswered points in the second quarter in a 42-7 victory Friday at Bearcat Stadium in a nonleague game between five-time champions in their respective states.
The loss was the first in 19 games for the Bearcats, who played without star running back Jess Anders, who aggravated a hip injury last week in a victory.
Amat lost its season opener to Santa Margarita, 26-21, last week.
“Yeah, it was a big improvement from last week,” Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said. “We played a lot better, and yeah, I was surprised by the final. It was a pretty impressive win for us. But things kind of just went our way. We’ve been on the other end of that, but the kids played great. It was night and day compared to last week.”
Only running back Isaiah Mallory’s 1-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter prevented the Bearcats from being shut out for the first time since 2001.
Amat quarterback Damian Garcia was 12-of-18 passing for 175 yards and three touchdowns for the Lancers, who gained 351 yards of total offense.
Garcia connected with Tyler Vaughns, Brandon Morales and Brandon Arconado on touchdown passes of 36, 10 and 12 yards, respectively.
Running back Anthony Camargo had two touchdowns for the Lancers, who scored 21 points off two Aledo turnovers and a blocked punt.
Amat won so convincingly that Hagerty didn’t want to get too caught up in it.
“Hopefully we don’t look at just the end result, the process is more important,” Hagerty said. “They were embarrassed the way they played (against Santa Margarita) and we had three good days of practice. If we go back and play like we did again and think things are just going to happen and we don’t have to earn them, then a win like this is just temporary happiness. But there’s a good vibe and we’ve got a good group. We’ll move upward.”
Mallory led the Bearcats with 164 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Luke Bishop had 105 yards rushing, including a 71-yard scamper that set up Mallory’s touchdown.
The Lancers went three-and-out on their first drive before something obviously clicked.
Amat scored 28 straight points, the first six coming on a drive of 10 plays covering 65 yards, capped by Carmargo’s 6-yard scoring run. The Lancers caught the Bearcats off-guard on fourth-and-9 from the Aledo 49, gaining 15 yards and a new set of downs on the drive’s most crucial play.
On the next series, Amat’s Greg Rodriguez blocked Aledo’s punt attempt, picked up the loose ball and returned it 18 yards for the Lancers’ second touchdown.
Amat then turned an interception into points, on yet another fourth-down conversion. Garcia hit Vaughns, who turned and ran down the sideline for 36 yards.
The Lancers struck quickly a fourth time. From their own 48, Garcia found Arconado deep down the middle for a 46-yard gain, setting up Carmago’s second TD run, this one from a yard out.
